Sleep is one of the most important and crucial parts of a person’s daily routine. And everyone has different amounts of sleep that they need. While a baby or a very old person might need longer amounts of sleep, a young adult needs it comparatively lesser. But that is not all. Recent research has found out that the amount of sleep needed significantly varies between men and women as well. In fact, women need more sleep than men. And the reasons for this amazing thing are mentioned below.
1. Menstrual Cycle
Cramps in the abdomen, discomfort, mood swings, and food cravings all combine to make for a restless night of sleep. Women with premenstrual syndrome are reported to have non-restorative sleep, frequent awakenings, poor sleep quality, and insomnia. As a result, women need to compensate and catch up on this sleep and thus they will definitely require a lot more sleep than men.
2. Restless leg syndrome
Restless legs syndrome causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, and its symptoms worsen in the evening and night. As a result, sleep for a person with this problem is highly disturbed. As per the research that was done on this illness, women are more likely to have it. The reason being that there is a link between female hormones and this neurological movement disorder. And so, it is problematic for them to be able to get proper sleep.
3. More mental energy utilised
According to researchers, women make use of a greater amount of their brains and also multitask more. This consumes more mental energy. Consequently, when it comes to relaxing and replenishing the brain during sleep, there’s more recovery that’s needed and, therefore, women need the extra bit of sleep. So basically, since women use more brains than men, they need more sleep to recharge it.
4. Sleep due to pregnancy
It is no secret that pregnancy takes its toll on the mother’s health while also requiring a lot of energy. As a result, the mom starts getting tired sooner and thus needs more amounts of sleep. So, the moms to be will require a lot more sleep, rest, care and proper diet throughout the nine months and even for a few years after childbirth. And since such they have brought in such an amazing life into the universe, they deserve that extra bit of sleep.
5. Poor sleep in the routine
Another reason women need to sleep a little more is that, often, the quality of sleep they’re getting isn’t as good. Certain life stages and physiological changes make women more susceptible to less restful sleep. In fact, women are said to be more prone to insomnia and poor sleep in adulthood and so it is but obvious that they will constantly need a bit more of sleep than their partners.
