What You Should Eat To Conceive Faster

For almost every couples, it is a blessed moment to know that a bundle of joy is soon going to complete their family. Embracing parenthood is indeed a cherishable moment. A lot of factors such as the general health, lifestyle habits, and practices and dietary habits have to be taken care of when a couple is trying to conceive. When it comes to conceiving, the health of both the partners is vital as problems in trying to conceive can be triggered by health problems in one or both the partners.

The dietary habits of a person can also contribute to a significant amount in the case of a pregnancy. Many doctors recommend the inclusion of certain foods in the diet which not only improves the general health but also enhances the chances of a person to conceive faster (often referred to as "Fertility-Boosting Foods").

Folic acid-rich foods

Foods rich in folic acid is known to be an excellent fertility boosting food for both the sexes. In fact, during pregnancy, a woman is given folic acid supplements for the benefit of both the mother and the fetus (lowers the risk of neural tube defects in the baby to an appreciable extent). Dark leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, beans, peas, lentils, seeds, and nuts, carrots, cauliflowers, squash, okra (lady's finger) are all laden with folic acid and should be consumed more if you are trying to go the family way. For fruitful results, most doctors recommend the daily intake of folic acid to be ideally between 400-600 mg before pregnancy.

Complex carbohydrates

Diabetes can trigger a host of complications in the affected individual including infertility (resulting from disruption of the normal functioning of the reproductive hormones). Thus, if you wish to get pregnant, keeping the insulin and blood glucose level within the healthy range is a must. Simple carbohydrates (such as pastries, chips, crackers, to name a few) are known to cause an elevation in the blood glucose level and should be avoided at any cost. Instead, one can opt for the complex carbohydrates, such as whole wheat grains and cereals, beans, peas. In addition to maintaining the blood glucose level, the complex carbohydrates ensure optimal functioning of the reproductive hormones thereby boosting one's fertility and chances of conceiving.

Olive oil is indeed a saviour that plays an instrumental role in boosting fertility. Trans-fats (such as pastries, cookies, doughnuts, margarine) can wreak havoc in your reproductive life by triggering ovulatory infertility. In contrast, olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that has a positive effect on the insulin-sensitivity in an individual which plays a catalytic role in accelerating your endeavour to get pregnant.

High-fibre foods

Like complex carbohydrates, dietary/cereal fibres contribute towards maintaining a healthy blood glucose level. Enriching the diet with fibre-rich foods (such as most of the fruits and vegetables, whole grains,) work wonders to prevent the hormonal imbalance which is often found to be one of the underlying factors responsible for infertility or problems in conceiving. Fibres also enhance the ability of the body to not only metabolize but also eliminate the excess estrogen produced in the body.

Flax seeds

Flax seeds are laden with omega-3 as well as omega-6 fatty acids, both of which works towards preventing a hormonal imbalance, the consequence of which often results in infertility. Flax seeds are also rich in Lignans, a phytoestrogen that goes a long way to eliminate the xenoestrogens (xenohormone mimicking the function of estrogen) from the body.

Further, to enhance your chances of getting pregnant,

- Try and limit the intake of caffeine, aerated drinks, and beverages, fried and processed foods, foods with a high glycemic index.

- Exercise regularly and keep your body weight under control.

- Keep stress, anxiety, and depression at bay and maintain a healthy sleep cycle (8-10 hours daily).

- It is best to give up on smoking as early as possible.
