What You Need To Know About Crohn's Disease

A-Z of Crohn's disease

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which adversely affects the lining of the digestive tract. It can lead to inflammation and scarring of the intestines. This can further cause abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue and malnutrition. Crohn’s disease can cause inflammation in different areas of the digestive tract in different people.  If not treated immediately, it can penetrate into deeper tissues of the bowel and create life threatening conditions. This can be extremely painful and debilitating. Here are a few other things that you should know about Crohn’s disease:

1. The cause is unknown

The cause is unknown

While this may be a little unbelievable, it is true. The cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown and doctors as well as researchers are still trying to determine the root from where it stems. So this rules out the ‘prevention is better than cure’ saying. Since the cause itself is not known, one cannot take any precautionary steps to prevent Crohn’s disease. Instead, you can look out for the symptoms and consult your doctor about the same.

2. Family history

Family history

Crohn’s disease may be related to your genes. If you have anyone in your family who is suffering from the disease, or someone who previously did - then chances are that you might encounter it too. If you have a family history of irritable bowel disorders, you are at a risk of Crohn’s disease.

3. Multiple ways to treat Crohn’s disease

Multiple ways to treat Crohn's

Not knowing the cause of a certain disease is inconvenient and perplexing. But, once you have spotted the symptoms, you can be rest assured that you have many options as well as ways of treating Crohn’s disease. This disease manifests itself in a myriad of different ways which is why treatment is tailored to fit every person’s condition.

4. Surgery does not help

Surgery does not help

Crohn’s disease has no cures and can only be controlled. Many people with Crohn’s disease undergo surgery at some point so as to reduce the pain since medication is not enough. The scar tissue can lead to complications such as bowel obstructions. While surgery may be recommended in some cases, it is not a permanent solution.

5. Emotional support is just as important

Emotional support is just as important

While doctors and surgeons will make sure that the disease is controlled to the best of their ability in its physical form, family members can make a lot of difference. This can be by providing emotional support.

It is not fair to the person suffering from the disease as they did not ask for it. At times, it may so happen that the physical pain is bearable but the mental frustration is too much to handle. In such cases, loved ones should form a strong support system in order to ensure the mental well being of the person suffering from Crohn’s disease.

6. Progress in modern medicine

Progress in modern medicine

The world has come a long way. Although Crohn’s cannot be completely cured, its treatment and care has had many breakthroughs. Today, Crohn’s is more controllable than ever before. If a person gets help soon, they can lead a completely normal and pain-free life. So while the condition is undesirable, you should not worry too much about it.
