What You Did Not Know About Breastfeeding

As a new mom, some of us are bombarded with tips on how to get through the first few months after having a baby. This may include tips on how to change your diaper within 2 minutes, cleaning up and how you should always choose to breastfeed. Your mother would probably give you plenty of tips too - like how to sit up while breastfeeding or about which formula you should use for the baby.

Nobody talks about the silly little doubts though. Questions like why you feel tired after breastfeeding and whether you can breastfeed even after getting an implant are unusual doubts, but they need to be answered! You can’t leave a new mother who is possibly sleep deprived and stressed out to just ponder about these things. Here are a few things about breastfeeding that you probably think about but don’t know about.

1. It makes you and your baby feel relaxed

When you put your baby on your breast, your body releases a hormone called oxytocin that is supposed to release the milk flow. This hormone also causes the body to relax. This is why you may even start to feel drowsy or tired. This could also be the reason why during the first few days, your baby will fall asleep right after a feeding session.

2. Breast milk supply is independent of size

Contrary to what you might think, your breast milk production is not dependent on the size of your breasts. It is possible for a woman with small breasts to produce more milk than a woman with bigger breasts. What you can do to increase your milk supply is to increase the number of feeding sessions and to express milk as well. Alternate between each breast during the feeding to make sure your baby gets enough milk. For most women, it is the right breast that produces more milk.

3. You need to care for your breasts

Once your baby arrives, all your time goes into making sure that your baby is fed, cleaned up and well-rested. But the same applies to you as well. You need to eat right, sleep well and clean yourself up regularly. Cleaning up after a feeding session is also important because you don’t want any milk residue to cause an infection on your breasts. If your nipples are sore after breastfeeding, make sure to gently wipe off any colostrum and then apply some nipple cream on to it.

4. It’s like a workout

Did you know that breastfeeding can make you burn up to 500 calories in a day? This is the reason why you should eat properly while breastfeeding. The extra nutrition is going to improve the quality of breast milk so make sure you are eating healthy for the next 10-12 months. Not eating properly can result in you feeling too exhausted to do anything and this is the time your baby needs you the most. So think wisely and eat right.

5. Implants don’t affect breastfeeding

If you are worried that you won’t be able to breastfeed due to getting an implant, we have some good news for you. Most women who have a breast implant are able to breastfeed. It only depends on whether the glandular tissue got affected before and after surgery, if there is any scarring on the milk ducts and the type of surgery that was performed. Your doctor will be able to give you a clear idea of whether you would be able to breastfeed.
