Your baby’s skin is still in the developing stages. It is super thin and doesn’t produce oil (sebum) on its own yet. Hence, dry skin is a common problem with babies. This is why you need to ensure that their skin stays moisturised so that it doesn’t turn dry. Dry skin can be very uncomfortable for your baby. It can even lead to serious skin problems like eczema.
1. Use a humidifier at home
If the weather is dry, start using a humidifier. By using a humidifier you can keep the moisture levels up in your house. This way, your baby’s skin is less likely to dry up fast.
2. Cut down on bath times
Babies should get only one (or less) baths in a single day. Infants can get maybe 3 baths per week and still stay clean. You would just have to give them a gentle sponge bath to clean them up. Avoid spending too much time in bathing them as this can cause their skin to become drier.
3. Apply moisturiser generously
Once you finish bathing your little one, make sure to apply a generous layer of moisturiser on their skin. This will keep their skin protected for a few hours. Make sure to reapply after a few hours to avoid drying out their skin.
4. Ensure your baby is hydrated
For infants, their hydration needs are met with breast milk itself. Once they start eating solid foods, you should start giving them water to drink as well. During dry weather conditions, you should increase this intake as the skin tends to become drier as well.
5. Look into the ingredients
Certain ingredients in skin care products can make your skin turn super dry. So, ensure that the products you buy for your baby are safe and don’t dry out their skin. Products like powders and perfumes tend to dry out the skin so avoid using them. Avoid using products that have ‘fragrance’ listed as an ingredient as well.
Here are some home remedies to treat dry skin:
1. Coconut oil
Massage your baby’s skin with coconut oil before bathing them. Apply a thick layer of oil on their skin to keep it protected during the bath. This helps give the skin a healthy glow.
Powder a cup full of oats and add this to a bucket of warm water. You can add a few drops of virgin olive oil to this. Mix well and then bathe your baby in this water.
3. Almond oil
After bath time, moisturise your baby’s skin with a light oil like almond oil. Make sure that the oil you use is pure almond oil and doesn’t contain any fragrances.
4. Aloe vera
If your baby has any dry patches of skin, apply some aloe vera on those patches. Massage it in until it gets completely absorbed by your baby’s skin.
