With a baby growing up, minor accidents such as head bumps (especially when the baby learns to crawl or walk) are almost impossible to avoid. While the baby’s inquisitiveness is mostly responsible for the bumps, accidental falls or losing balance can be the reason for the head bumps too. As a parent, it is important not to be too critical of self and maintain calm when the baby cries out loud due to pain in the head. Here is a micro snippet of things to do in case of a head bump.
Rub the head:
As soon as the baby bumps his/ her head, it is essential to rub the skull with your palm vigorously. Rubbing the head immediately following a bump plays a pivotal role to negate the formation of blood clots and other threatening complications that may surface due to the blood clots.
Check the area:
If the baby bumps his/her head against a blunt object, it is necessary to check for any possible nicks and cuts. However, in the case of a head bump against a sharp object, the probability of a deep cut or a skull injury are relatively higher. Under such circumstances, waste no time and apply an antiseptic cream to stop the flow of blood if any. To play it safe, seek medical assistance at the earliest.
Check for swelling:
As a parent, it is not easy to see the baby cry. However, crying is normal with babies getting hurt. Following the head bump, it is essential to observe the affected region of the head for 1/2-1 hour and not panic if there is a small swelling. It is normal after a head bump or a fall. If at all there is a swelling around the head, it is necessary to apply ice at the earliest. Application of ice on the affected area has a soothing effect and goes a long way to alleviate both the pain as well as the swelling to an appreciable extent.
Examine the area:
For any parent, it is heart-wrenching to see their child in pain. However, instead of panicking, observe and examine the bumped region of the head carefully. Usually, a bump followed by a swell on the front end of the head is less risky compared to the back side of the head. If the head gets bumped on the back, it makes sense to visit a doctor at the earliest to avoid any complications.
The duration of the baby’s sob:
Since a toddler can’t speak, one needs to be a little alert to understand their emotions. In case of a head bump or a fall, it is natural for a baby to cry. However, the duration of their sob can say a lot about the severity of the bump. If the baby is found to be cranky ever after 15-20 minutes and the crying doesn’t stop, a parent should be concerned and seek medical help.
Look out for concussions:
A concussion can be a big reason of worry for a parent. Do not take the head bump lightly if the baby vomits, feels dizzy or fall sleepy. Even in case of a seizure after a fall or a head bump, a baby should be immediately rushed to the nearest medical facility to get thoroughly checked for any internal damage (as concussions can be an outcome of an internal tissue damage as well).
