If your infant passes away within 20 weeks of your pregnancy, that is known as a Miscarriage. Approximately 50% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. And almost 80% of the miscarriages happen in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

The chances of having a miscarriage drastically reduces after you complete 20 weeks of pregnancy. Even if miscarriages do happen, they happen in very rare cases. They’re known as late miscarriages.

Symptoms of miscarriages:

1. Light to heavy bleeding

2. Severe abdominal pain

3. Fever

4. Excessive pain in the muscles around the stomach

5. Weakness

6. Back Pain

If you find yourself having these symptoms, meet your gynecologist immediately and get yourself checked and maybe, treated.

Why does a miscarriage happen?

Most miscarriages are caused by genetic malfunctions in the baby, and not due to the mother. However, there are a few other reasons due to which a miscarriage could happen:

i) Infection

ii) Diabetes or a Thyroid malfunction in mother

iii) Hormonal imbalances

iv) A decrease in the immunity

v) Physical discomforts faced by the mother

vi) Problems in uterus / weak uterus

The risk of a miscarriage increases under these conditions:

i) If the mom’s age is more than 35 years

ii) If a mom is suffering from diabetes or a thyroid problem

iii) If a mom has already had more than 3 miscarriages

Cervical Insufficiency

Due to the weakness of the cervix, the womb is not steady or stable. It is for this reason that the miscarriage happens in the second trimester. Some symptoms which are observed are - initially, the pregnant woman might feel heaviness in the lower part of her uterus, and then the baby’s body might start to fall through the vaginal path as though the water has broken, along with the embryo and umbilical cord and even some amount of blood.

It’s important for everyone to be aware about these things. We hope that your pregnancy is healthy and pleasant. Share this with others!
