Your baby is the best and the most important part of your life. And thus, you obviously don’t want anything to happen to them. But, the weather has drastically changed in the past couple of days and so your little one has become a bit more susceptible to getting ill. Thus, it becomes even more important that you understand the basic illnesses that your little one is more prone to. And one such illness is a cough. There are multiple reasons due to which even your little baby can start coughing and it is important that you understand everything there is about the types of coughing.
Generally, a baby below the age of 4 months should not cough and should be properly protected from any cause that is likely to encourage coughing. And if, by any chance, your little one starts coughing and is still under 4 months of age then call a doctor immediately. Some other reasons due to which your little one might cough are listed below.
It is a viral or bacterial infection of the lungs that can be caused by a number of conditions, including the common cold. Its symptoms include fatigue, wet and phlegmy cough, vomit in the shades of green and yellow. It is important that you call the doctor if you suspect pneumonia as the treatment will depend on the cause of the illness. It is more important to call the doctor especially if the baby has a fever.
The baby can have croup if s/he wakes up in the middle of the night with a barking cough and has difficulty breathing. Generally, children below the age of 5 years are more prone to this ailment and it might start with general coughing or sneeze. It is usually caused by a viral infection. Croup makes the lining of the trachea swell up and also closes the airways thereby resulting in the baby having difficulty breathing. Try running hot water in your bathroom and allow the little one to breathe some of the steam in which will help open the trachea and ease the breathing.
3. Bronchitis or Asthma
Both bronchiolitis and asthma come on after what seems to be a basic cold, with coughing and a runny nose. They are generally a result of some allergy or irritation that the baby feels in the trachea which also squeezes the trachea. This is why you need to take care of your little one even more. It can often become difficult to differentiate between bronchitis and asthma as most of their symptoms are same and can also be mistaken for just a common cold. If you feel that your little baby might be suffering from any of these then you need to call a doctor immediately and get treatment as soon as possible.
4. Common cold
The basic symptoms associated with common cold are a runny nose and coughing. Generally, a cold is the body’s way of fighting an infection and sometimes can also result in the little one having a fever. Thus, it is important that a lot of precautions are taken in order to keep the child safe and healthy. A part of this regime needs to be giving them lots of fluid so that the little one can recover sooner. Generally, the little one might experience dry coughing if s/he is suffering from common cold.
