Toxic Chemicals To Avoid Using During Pregnancy

There are a lot of things we change during pregnancy. We induce some good habits while give up on certain bad ones. Mothers are advised to give up smoking and alcohol for the baby’s health and that of hers. While referring to the standard list of do’s and don’ts, you should also take care of certain other aspects.

Sure, your doctors and family members give you loads of advice and magazines on taking care of yourself and your baby during and after pregnancy, but does anyone talk about your makeup and skincare regimen?

We are exposed to a lot of toxic chemicals during the course of our day, but in the case of women, most of these chemicals come from their make-up and skincare products. While most of the products are undoubtedly good for you under normal conditions, there are a few chemical ingredients you should avoid when pregnant. Here are a few of them:

1. Retinoids

Retin-A and Accutane are majorly found in anti-ageing and prescription acne medications. Read the ingredients and if the products you use have any retinoids, ask your dermatologist to recommend you some other product which would be free from Retinoids. There is a proven link between these medications and birth defects in developing babies. So if you are planning on getting pregnant, give them up.

2. Tetracycline

Tetracyclines are antibiotics used to treat lyme disease and certain acne related issues. Research has shown that their consumption can damage the pregnant woman’s liver and can cause discoloration in the baby’s teeth. As an alternative, your doctor will most likely prescribe you an erythromycin or amoxicillin.

3. Hydroquinone

This is a skin-lightening agent used to treat conditions such as melasma and chloasma. While no studies have shown a direct link between this chemical and the risk it poses to your baby, the fact that this ingredient is absorbed into your skin and can alter the contents of your bloodstream should be reason enough for you to avoid this chemical up until your baby is born.

4. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a major ingredient in products such as – nail polish, eyelash glue, hair straightening treatments and even certain baby products. So ensure that you eliminate the use of this ingredient from the set of products that you use, not only during pregnancy but also postpartum from a few baby products that might sport them.

5. Ammonia

This chemical is commonly found in hair dyes and other hair related products. While some brands have come up with awareness campaigns in order to promote ammonia-free dyes and products, there are still some products that have these ingredients. Ammonia is an irritant of the skin and the lungs.

It is imperative for mothers to realize the importance of choosing products that are non-toxic. The habit of opting for organic and natural ingredient-based products should be inculcated not only during pregnancy but also postpartum to take good care of your baby. Just like you are extremely sensitive to everything that is happening around you during your pregnancy, your baby too is extremely sensitive. Only you can take good care of them.
