Top Five Home Remedies For Mastitis (Blocked Ducts)

One of the joys of motherhood is caring for your little one and seeing them grow up strong and beautiful. Young moms become so engrossed in their child's wants and needs that they neglect their own health and well-being. Breastfeeding is the best way of ensuring that your baby gets the nutrition it needs and it creates a special bond between the mother and the newborn. It is an experience to be cherished but sometimes it leads to complications. Mastitis is a very common condition among women who breastfeed.About 10% of breastfeeding women are affected. It is an inflammation of the breast leading to pain and redness. Women who aren’t breastfeeding can also develop mastitis. It usually develops within the first three to six months of giving birth.

What Are The Symptoms?

The symptoms may come on very rapidly and some may even experience flu-like symptoms.

 1. Breast tenderness

 2. Swelling of the breast

 3. Pain or a burning sensation continuously or while breastfeeding

 4. Fever

 5. Redness

Even though it’s very unpleasant and a pain to deal with, there are natural remedies to cure it and alleviate the pain. Here is the list of natural remedies for mastitis:

1. Keep Feeding

It’s important to maintain a regular feeding schedule since it unblocks the milk duct. Even if you have mastitis, your breast milk should be safe and feeding keeps the milk healthy and not stagnant. Stagnant milk tends to become infected. It’s important to empty the affected breast since it helps alleviate the pain.

2. Apply Heat

It is a simple yet effective treatment. Placing a warm compress on the affected area for about 15 mins, three times a day helps a lot since it increases circulation, decreases swelling and aids in the flow of milk. Warm compresses are easy to make and can be made at home.

3. Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibiotic and helps strengthen the body’s immune system. You have to ingest one to five raw cloves of garlic a day for it to take effect. If you do not prefer raw garlic then it is a good idea to include cooked garlic in your food and make it a part of your daily diet. Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties and is very good for your health.

4. Rest

The best thing for you and your baby is to get as much rest as possible and recuperate. This promotes a healthy immune system and encourages regular feedings with your baby while you lay down and relax in bed. You need to take it easy and focus on getting better.

5. Cabbage Leaves

Raw cabbage leaves are effective in fighting infections like mastitis. They help reduce the breast inflammation and relieve the pain and discomfort. You just have to place the leaf for several hours in your bra. Cooling the leaves by refrigerating them makes them more effective and it is very soothing. You can use the leaves for about 20 mins or so till they become warm and then replace them with fresh ones.
