Top 25 Natural Home Remedies for Fever, Cold and Cough in Babies & Toddlers


As hard as you may try, your baby can never be 100% resistant to illnesses. Conditions out of your control, such as change in the weather, do affect your baby’s health. There are however, many easy home remedies to help you and your child through ailments such as the common cold, cough, and fever. You must look out for signs and symptoms of a flu or cold and cough in your child and try to remedy it or prevent its deterioration.


1.Breast milk:


For very young babies, breast milk is enough to fight off bacteria and germs which are causing a cold/cough/ flu. It’s extremely nutritious for the child, so make sure to feed your baby enough. It helps improve immunity and stay hydrated which works wonders in fighting off the flu virus.


2.Saline Drops:


A stuffy nose makes breathing difficult and uncomfortable. Nasal drops will help clear the mucus from the nostrils and open up the passageway for easy breathing. It’s safe to use 2-3 times in one day.


3.Fluids:


Increasing the amount of fluids consumed by your child is also a helpful trick to flush out the germs faster. If you notice symptoms of cold and cough and the flu, this is a step that can be taken immediately, without extra effort.


4.Soup:


For a cold and cough, serving your baby or toddler with hot soup is a good way to go. This has many benefits. In the first place, it increases fluid content. Secondly, the heat can be soothing to the throat. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory properties.


5.Honey:


Honey helps to sooth the throat and has been sometimes more effective than cough syrup. Its nice taste also makes it easier to feed to children.


6.Oil massage:


Certain oils have antibacterial properties which will help get rid of the bacteria causing the cold. The oil massage also helps to warm the body to beat congestion and cure sickness.


7.Head elevation:


Keeping your baby’s head slightly elevated makes it easier for the baby to breathe as it facilitates the entry of more air.


8.Avoid dairy:


Dairy products create more mucus which lines the throat, so it’s best to avoid these.


9.Onion:


Onion or onion juice has been said to be a good home remedy to getting rid of colds, coughs, and fevers. Try making your baby drink this (It’ll be hard though).


10.Wash cloth:


Use cool washcloths to bring down the baby’s temperature if he/she is exhibiting signs and symptoms of a flu/fever. Dipping it in egg white and placing on the baby’s feet has been shown to bring down temperatures quite fast.


11.Sponge bath:


Alternatively, giving babies sponge baths also helps bring the temperature down as the evaporation of water cools down the body.


12.Rest:


Fighting off germs takes up a lot of energy. It’s important for your child to rest so that he/she has enough energy for the body to continue fighting off the germs.


13.Vapour Rub:


In order to get rid of a cold, rub the vapour rub onto the child’s back, chest, neck, and on the soles of the feet.


14.Carom seeds:


Make your child drink water which has been boiled with carom seeds. This greatly helps get rid of coughs and congestion.


15.Garlic and carom seed pouch:


Make a little pouch with garlic which has been roasted along with carom seeds and hang it in the baby’s cot (not too close to the baby). These are anti-bacterial and anti-viral and also help to clear out congestion and open up blocked noses.


16.Soft food:


For very young baby’s, feeding them soft food helps to fight congestion in the body.


17.Humidifier:


Placing a humidifier in the same room as the sick child will help make breathing easier.


18.Steam:


Inhaling steam or being in steamy air helps to loosen up the mucus and facilitates easy breathing.


19.Cough Drops:


For toddlers, and older children, lozenges and other such cough drops can help soothe the throat. Giving it to younger children and babies may lead to choking.


20.Gargling:


This one is for toddlers as babies will not have mastered this skill. Gargling with warm/hot salt water helps to kill the bacteria in the throat and clear mucus.


21.Lemon juice:


Drinking lemon juice with a bit of honey will help provide relief from coughs. It also helps keeping the kids hydrated.


22.Turmeric milk:


If your child is experiencing a dry cough, milk with turmeric in it helps to fight the illness and provide relief. It also helps getting undisturbed sleep.


23.Water with honey and ginger:


This combination tastes nice and helps to fight the infection. Make sure the water is warm.


24.Saffron Milk:


Also known as kesar milk, this is effective in overcoming colds and coughs. It’s better suited for toddlers, as opposed to very young babies.


25.Ghee and black pepper:


This combination is yummy to eat and instrumental in getting rid of a pesky cold or cough.


All these are natural home remedies which should work wonders. However, it is best to consult a doctor in order to ensure that whatever the problem is, it’s not too serious. Also try preventive measures to lessen the probability of your child contracting illness. Some of these include – ensuring proper hygiene around the house, sanitizing yours and your child’s hands often, making your child wear the appropriate clothing to prepare for weather changes, and many more.
