Top 10 Foods You Should NOT Feed Your Baby

Starting to eat solid food is a memorable achievement in the first year of the baby’s life, but parents need to be particularly careful about what they feed to the baby. Whatever is healthy for you is not necessarily healthy for your baby too. We are sharing a list of some food items that health experts believe should be avoided until after the baby turns one year of age.

1. Milk: 

Cow’s milk or soy milk can be too hard for the baby to digest as it contains proteins and minerals that can prove damaging to the kidneys of the baby that are still developing. Also, some babies may be lactose intolerant or have allergic reactions to the proteins, which can cause diarrhoea. The best thing to do is to continue breastfeeding the baby or stick to the formula during the baby’s first year.

2. Citrus Fruits:

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries contain proteins that are not easy for babies to digest. Fruits like grapes and oranges are too acidic and can cause rashes or upset stomach. If you anyhow wish to offer these to your baby you may want to make sure that they are cut in very small pieces so that the baby does not choke on them and dilute the juices with water.

3. Honey: 

Honey is a potential source of a bacteria that can develop into infant botulism. The complications of this type of botulism can be serious for toddlers. Constipation, weak cries, difficulty in sucking from the breast, floppy movements are signs of infant botulism. Other liquid sweeteners, like maple syrup etc., pose a similar risk. These should also be refrained from giving to the babies.

4. Peanut Butter:

Like peanut, peanut butter too can cause serious allergic reactions. Other than that, what most parents do not realize is that a thick layer of peanut butter can also pose a choking hazard. So, you should skip giving sandwiches with peanut butter to your baby. Even when they grow a little older, make sure that to spread it evenly in a thin layer.

5. Some Vegetables:

Common vegetables like spinach, beets, lettuce have nitrate levels that are too high for the babies to process. Babies do not have stomach acids that are strong enough to break down the nitrates, which in turn result in blocking the blood’s ability to transport oxygen. This may lead to Blue Baby Syndrome, which is a result of extremely low oxygen levels. Stick to food items that are rich in vitamins and low in nitrates, like peas and sweet potatoes.

6. Salt:

Babies only need one gram of salt per day. The formula and the breast milk contain it in the adequate amount needed. Your baby’s kidneys are not yet developed enough to process larger amounts of sodium. Hence, avoiding salt becomes important. Processed foods that are not formulated for the babies contain a high amount of sodium and should be avoided.

7. Nuts: 

Nuts should be avoided because they can be highly allergic and are a serious choking hazard, which may even cause death. A baby’s airway is small and something even tiny can get lodged in the throat.

8. Chocolate:

All babies love to gorge on chocolate but the caffeine present in the chocolate can have an adverse effect on their health. Not only this but the dairy product present in it can also be difficult to digest by the babies. Relatively larger pieces of chocolate or candies pose a choking risk as well.

9. Popcorn:

Popcorn is a tasty, crunchy and healthy snack that is loved by everyone. But it is a serious choking hazard for toddlers. The centre of each piece of popcorn is firm and neither does it break off easily like the outer kernel nor dissolves. Babies younger than 12 months should never be given popcorn. 

10. Eggs:

Eggs are one of the favourite foods for breakfast, but severe allergic reactions to eggs and especially egg whites are quite common. If you want to give eggs to your baby, separate the whites and thoroughly cook the yolks and introduce it alone so that you know the source in case of an allergic reaction.
