Swaddling is the best way to make sure that your little baby sleeps properly and does not get scared or wakes up rarely throughout the night. Swaddling doesn’t only work during sleep time but also works when you need to calm your little one when they are crying. But even swaddling is an art and thus it is important that you are able to do it properly. And to help you through it, we have made a list of some tips that you can follow.
1. Make the baby sleep on their back
According to research, when babies who are swaddled sleep on their stomachs or sides, the risk of sudden infant death goes up drastically. When a baby is face down, they may not be able to raise their head if they have trouble breathing and so it is important that you make them sleep on their backs.
2. Take care that the wrap is not too warm
Swaddling your little one in a warmer blanket can actually make them more restless and irritated. So, it is important that you choose a cooler blanket or wrap and make sure that it has air passing through it. Also, by using a warm wrap, it might lead to them sweating too much and thereby crying because they are feeling hot. Just make sure that you choose the appropriate type of blanket to swaddle your little one in.
3. It should neither be too tight nor too loose
When you swaddle your baby the wrap should be firm but not tight or overly loose. Loose wraps can cover your baby’s face and pose the risk of suffocation. On the other hand, if the wrap is too tight, it can make it difficult for the baby to breathe. So, you need to make sure that the swaddle is just right and the baby is comfortable in it.
4. Choose the right wrap
There are all kinds of cloth materials available in the market. It is important that you choose the right one. Give preference to a cotton wrap that also allows air to pass through it. Also, the length of the wrap needs to be a key factor. The wrap should neither be too short nor should it be too long. Just choose the one which fits your little one perfectly.
5. Don’t swaddle them once they learn how to unwrap
When your baby starts to show signs of rolling over or is able to pull the wrap open, it’s time to stop swaddling. This is because there’s a danger that they could roll over and cover their face. The unravelled fabric could also pose the risk of strangulation or suffocation. It is also important to take care that their blanket is underneath their armpits every time to you tuck them at the sides and in no way should it cover their face.
