Attachment parenting is a concept that has been around for over three decades. It involves establishing a strong bond between you and your baby by keeping them close to you at all times. Of course, babies are meant to be kept close, but in today’s world, where both parents are busy at work, it becomes difficult to keep them close throughout the day. Some people may not approve of attachment parenting, as they feel you may be spoiling your child. On the contrary, some people may tell you that attachment parenting is the best way to bring up your child. So yes, it can get a bit confusing.
Here are some pros and cons to help you decide if attachment parenting is for you.
When a mother breastfeeds, she is not only providing her child all the necessary nutrients, but she is also creating a sacred bond with her child. The child causes a hormone called prolactin to be produced in the mother’s body while breastfeeding. This hormone helps induce sleep which is much required for stressed-out mothers.
2. Time Spent With Parents
The time that parents spend with their babies is crucial in building their character from an early age. Parents will go through a change themselves – they come down to the level of their babies to understand what their baby really needs. In turn, babies observe the speech and mannerisms of their parents and gradually come up to their level. So, this would be the perfect time to ensure you are a good role model to your child.
3. Body Language
A very important role in parenting is the ability to read your baby’s body language and understand their every need. This would get easier as you spend more time with them. In the same way, a baby can detect when there is something wrong. So, you would have to maintain a happy atmosphere around the baby to ensure that they feel safe and comfortable and thus, learn to become a happier parent yourself.
4. Wary Of Surroundings
With attachment parenting, babies tend to become more alert of their surroundings. They are less likely to fuss or cry and instead become more happy and pleasant.
5. Brain Development
Their brains are in their developing stage and triple in weight during the first 3 years. This is the time when babies learn a lot by observing everything around them. By spending time with your baby at such a young age, you can actually make them smarter.
6. Super Strong Bond
This technique ensures that you nurture a strong bond with your baby from the very start. This would lead to a deeper relationship with mutual trust and understanding.
1. The Feeling Of No Privacy Among Children
Since it involves being around your child all the time, it may make your child feel like they do not have any time on their own. So, a balancing act would be required to ensure they have some privacy and time to be by themselves.
2. Unhealthy Attachment Affecting Parent's Lifestyle
With this form of parenting, parents may find that they don’t want to spend time on anything else. They become very attached to their children and may not even spend time on other commitments and relationships.
3. Too Pampered
Your kids may end up being pampered to the point that they are not disciplined or punished when they do something wrong. This could take an absurd turn, as the children may take advantage of this and do things they are not supposed to knowing you are not going to punish them.
4. Adverse Affect On Behaviour
You may feel the need to constantly be around your child and may get anxious when your child is away for too long. This overprotective behaviour could adversely affect your child, as they may grow up to feel like they cannot be trusted to do anything and may also feel afraid to do anything on their own.
So there you have it – the pros and cons. You can choose what you like from this concept. Be proactive and choose the kind of habits that could work well with your lifestyle – hire a nanny or a childcare provider, for example. There is no fixed rule in bringing up your child. Choose what you think would work best for him/her.
