Types of Common Allergies in kids

Although these allergies occur commonly, you need to ensure that your child doesn’t develop any of them. There’s a chance that these symptoms could get worse and without proper treatment and care, they may cause extreme discomfort.

Some of the common allergies in kids are:

1. Food Allergy

Food allergies could occur when children consume a particular food for the first time. Common allergens are peanuts, eggs, milk, dairy products and gluten. A milk allergy (lactose intolerance) can come up during the latter years of the child’s life when he begins to consume milk. On the contrary, peanut, gluten and other such allergies can surface after 6 months of age when solid foods are introduced.

Current recommendations suggest food items like peanuts and other nuts should be introduced early in the first year of life.

2. Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Although the symptoms are similar to a common cold, allergic rhinitis is one of the most common allergies in kids. It causes a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and sometimes it escalates to severe levels causing a blocked nose, wheezing and other related breathing difficulties. A child with allergic rhinitis may also develop pain in the ear, which may eventually lead to infection. This can be caused by pollen, parthenium or other allergens in the air.

3. Asthma

It is a condition in which there is a restriction in the flow of air due to the inflammation, narrowing and swelling of the air passages. The body begins to produce extra mucus which makes it difficult to breathe normally. It may be triggered by similar allergens which causes rhinitis. It leads to wheezing, difficulty in breathing, coughing and shortness of breath.

4. Sinusitis

It is a condition in which the cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed. It could get triggered by a cold or some allergens present in the air. One way to know the onset of the sinus is through signs like headache, facial pain, nasal congestion and a runny nose.

5. Bee-sting allergy

A bee sting is never gentle, but if somebody is allergic to the bee venom or bee sting, things could get worse. It may cause swelling of the stung area, severe redness and itching. It may cause swollen air passages leading to difficulty in breathing and dizziness.

6. Eczema

An eczema is a form of dermatitis, which is one of the common allergies in kids. It is a skin condition which is marked by an itchy and an inflamed patch of skin. It appears around the elbow or behind the knees of young kids and teens. Scratching the affected areas can lead to redness of the skin.

How to Avoid Common Allergies in Kids

We believe that prevention is better than cure. So here are a bunch of ways to prevent your child from developing any kind of allergies:

1. Steam inhalation after a warm bath can help in clearing up any nasal or chest congestion. It also helps in killing the bacteria as it is difficult for them to thrive in warm temperatures.

2. Keeping the baby hydrated definitely helps in keeping the allergies at bay. Keep a water bottle or sipper handy because it works as an easy reminder.

3. When the weather is hot, keeping the baby in a cool environment can help in keeping them away from pollen and other common airborne allergens.

4. With itchy and scratchy eyes, a cold compress is the best remedy to bring a soothing relief instantly.

5. Using some warm compress over the face can help in relieving sinus pain and sinus blockages. Using steam inhalation is also helpful in dealing with sinus.
