Sleepless nights come with the territory of being a new mother. Your baby needs to be fed what seems like a million times in the day (it's only about 8 times actually!) and there is no real time to sleep.
Your ideal day starts with making breakfast, massaging, bathing and dressing the baby, and hopefully yourself too, and hell it’s already lunch time! And when you’re not caring for or feeding the baby, there’s still house chores like cleaning, doing the dishes and laundry to be done that are just sitting there, waiting for you, staring you right in the face whenever you get any kind of breathing room.
But worry not, we are here to help! Check out our guide for new mothers on how they can get some sleepy time-
1. Ask your husband for help
He’s probably very helpful with the baby, but ask him to help you around the house too, if he isn’t already! You both should sit down and divide the housework in a way wherein you get to rest for some time in the day without disrupting his work.
2. Take help from close relatives/friends
Call your baby’s grandparents down to your place! They obviously adore their grandchild and love to play with her/him and are well suited to take care of the baby. Let them play and care for the baby while you sleep in peace for a while. Also, if your sibling or friends are experienced with babies then bonus!
3. Take paid help
There are a number of agencies out there that you can contact to get paid help. This can be really beneficial as you can just delegate the house work and solely focus on your baby’s needs, and yours. But always make sure that the agency and your help can be fully trusted, and do background checks to ensure complete safety.
4. Pump out milk for the night time
Your baby should not be fed with anything but breastmilk or formula for the first year of their life, and so you need to get up every two hours or so to feed them. Consider buying a breast pump and pumping out a couple bottles when you’re just too tired so that your husband or the help can feed the baby and you can get at least 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
5. Try to sleep when your baby does
This can be really helpful, in the daytime as well as the night. Try and nap when your baby does so that you get periods of rest when they don’t require you. But always be sure to be in close proximity of your baby to avoid any accidents.
6. Learn to prioritize
Learn to say no to extra responsibility or added housework when you are a new mother. Distinguish between what is urgent and needs immediate attention and what isn’t. Don’t fill up your plate with too much work, it’s okay if you can’t help others at such a time! Get as much rest and sleep as you can because you never know when you will have this golden opportunity next!
