Technology For Kids: Yay Or Nay?
Technology is a part of everyone’s life. Whether we like to admit it or not, we can’t live without it. As the generations have gone by, technology has become a larger part of our lives and, today, kids are using mobile phones.
Why isn't it a bad thing?
When your child is immersed in playing a game, he/she is actually practicing very complex and necessary skills. It has been seen that frequent video game players have sharper vision, faster reaction times, and are better at multitasking and do not get distracted easily. Screen time can create connections and closeness with other children. It has been seen that children on social media sites display more virtual empathy. This means that they are more likely to express support and encouragement.
When does technology become a problem?
The more hours children spend using an electronic device, the weaker their emotional bonds become with their parents. This is the result of a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics And Adolescent Medicine. Also, screen time can make a child put on weight due to the lack of exercise and the amount of time the spend playing video games. They are more likely to eat when they are in front of the TV and too much screen use also interferes with sleep. These influences can make children fatter and less fit, even if they are physically active otherwise. It has been found that children who use computers the most, i.e., more than three to four hours a day, were almost 50% more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as drinking, smoking, drug use, and unprotected sex than kids with minimal amounts. However, whether these findings are true or false, too many hours in front of the TV will eventually be harmful to your child’s health.
What does all this mean? Are electronics good or bad for kids? The bottom line is that too much of anything is bad. So, just like all things in life, there should be a balance between screen time and time spend doing other activities such as reading, playing outdoors and just being imaginative. Otherwise, you’ll either have a child not prepared for this tech-crazy world or a child with a lot of health problems among others.
