Teaching Your Kids About The Environment

Children are our future, they mould as and how we shape them. While teaching them qualities like patience, humility, kindness and decency, it is also imperative to teach them about giving back to the society and to the environment. Most of us are aware of how the environment is deteriorating with each passing day and no amount of effort to revive its early form has become quite so successful.

Charity begins at home, but how many of us truly live up to this saying? Teaching your kids about the environment and educating them about its importance can create a huge difference. You don’t necessarily have to make them read pros and cons of the environment from a textbook.

Follow these few simple steps to teach your kids about the environment:

1. Set an example

You are only allowed to give advice if you yourself follow it and live up to it. Kids are extremely observant and will notice the small things you do for your external space. Plant a tree once every month, take proper care of your garden; install electric chimneys in the house so as to prevent pollution of the outer environment. It goes without saying, a picture is worth a thousand words and actions are worth millions.

2. 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle)

These 3Rs are very important and can be used in all walks of life. Try to reduce the usage of things that cause harm to the environment or are wasteful in any manner. Give your child a chocolate or treat every time they switch off lights and fans that someone else left on, in spite of not using them. Reuse plastic bags rather than throwing them out and recycle toys or spare parts of household equipment.

3. Participate in outside activities

Participate in activities such as beach clean up so as to teach your children that it is not just the immediate environment that they should care about but all their surrounding; even when they don’t come across certain places every day. Make sure to teach your kids about not littering and instead of carrying a spare bag to dispose of waste if need be.

4. Take them out

In today’s modern world, it is very difficult for parents to unhook kids from their precious electronic gadgets. Keep at least a certain time aside from every single day to perform activities that would bring them in contact with nature. Take them outside for a stroll and ask them what all they see. Teach them the importance of fresh air, water and trees on the human health.

5. Household environment

It is necessary to teach our kids about the optimum use of resources. Whether it is electricity, water or food; they need to be told that there is a price for everything and hence everything is valuable. Ask them to take care of small details, such as, turning off the faucet while brushing, not wasting food, turning off lights and fans when not in use, keeping their rooms neat and clean, etc.
