Taking Care Of Your Skin After Having a Baby

Pregnancy, while immensely fruitful, tends to take a toll on a mother’s body. Growing a tiny human inside you ought to have its fair share of effects on the grower. It affects our bodies as much as it affects our lives. One of the primary aspects of the body that is affected is the skin. Postpartum, most women complain of problems such as dry skin, itchiness, acne, dull skin, patchiness, and other such skin problems.

Acne flare-up is caused due to a large number of hormones produced in the body during pregnancy; these hormones, while essential during pregnancy, take some time to regain balanced levels postpartum. Patchiness is generally caused due to an increase in melanin that also occurs during pregnancy. Itchiness and dry skin, especially around the tummy region can be attributed to the stretching of the skin as your baby grows in the womb. This is also why the region around stretch marks tends to be itchy.

Here are some tips that most moms have found helpful in combating these issues and achieving optimal skin care postpartum.

1. Lotion:

Stretch marks and dry skin are a major problem for most women. Don’t worry though, stretch marks fade naturally; however, you can help the process along. Applying lotion or moisturizer can make your skin supple and nourished and help reduce any skin irritation around your stretch marks. Do make sure that you buy creams fit for your skin type. If dry skin is the problem hydrating creams might be a safer bet. Remember that having acne doesn’t mean you have oily skin, so don’t jump to conclusions!

2. Hydration:

For dry skin and acne, one of the best things you can do is drink lots of water. Make sure you get at least a couple of litres a day. If you find it hard to drink water or if you forget, try incorporating veggies and fruits with high water content in your diet. Water keeps you hydrated which can help with the dry skin as well as cool which can help with the acne. Keeping your body cool from the inside will reduce acne due to reducing the heat inside your body.

3. Exercise:

Another way to help make your stretch marks fade faster is by exercising. Making the flab go away will help reduce the tension on your skin. Tightening up your abdominal region and toning your body will help you get back in shape and reduce the discomfort caused by the stretch marks (along with some moisturizing).

4. Cleansing:

When it comes to acne and skin blemishes, you can’t ask for a better solution than some good old face wash. If your acne was caused due to your pregnancy, it should clear up in its own time, but you can always help it along by making you sure you indulge in some daily cleansing routine. Make sure to wash your face at least twice or thrice a day. Remember that when it comes to acne, avoid face scrubs as they have a tendency to aggravate the issue. Make sure you use a face wash that suits your skin. If you aren’t sure what to use or if you feel like the acne isn’t getting better, you should consult a dermatologist.

5. Prescription products:

The pigmentation and patchiness that you may be faced with should go away on is own. However, you could speed up the process by some prescription meds and ointments which a dermatologist can suggest and elaborate on. Dermatologists can also help if you feel like your acne problem isn’t going away.

6. Sun protection:

To help your pigmentation problem, it’s suggestible to stay out of the sun as much as possible and to use sun protection when stepping out during the day. Sunscreen, hats, umbrellas, whatever works, but make sure you do it because you don’t need tanning when you’re waiting for the melanin to sort itself out.

7. Diet:

Making sure that you maintain a healthy diet can help with all these problems and more. Eating healthy will help make sure your acne isn’t aggravated because of too much heaty food and that your body is well hydrated internally. Internal hydration will lead to the healthy and glowing skin.

Most of your skin problems will sort themselves out on their own but you can help the process along. Remember to be patient as it will take its time, but be positive and don’t be shy to visit a doctor!
