12 Superfoods To Boost Your Child’s Immunity!

Seasonal changes can be agonizing for parents, mothers in particular. More often than not, kids complain of fever, cold, running nose, sore throat, gastrointestinal ailments, and headache. The problem is not always what meets the eye. An internal factor, the immune system to be precise may be contributing in a big way to your kid's sufferings. A weak immune system will not be able to fight against the pathogenic agents. Relax! There is no reason to lose heart over this. A little care and effort are all that is needed to improve your kid's immune system. Few superfoods work miraculously to strengthen the immune system. It is also important that you consult a Pediatrician.

1. An eggy protection:

You can never go wrong with eggs. Tasty and nutritious, an egg a day is a must for your kid's immunity. The egg yolk, in particular, is a rich source of many important vitamins (Vitamin A, D, E, vitamin B1, B3, B6, B9, B12,), minerals and antioxidants. The vitamins and minerals are great immune boosters and will provide better protection.

2. Yogurt, an intestinal savior:

Some bacteria are good for your body. The probiotic laden yogurt and curd go a long way in keeping the gastrointestinal ailments at bay. The good bacteria prevent the pathogenic and disease-causing bacteria from colonizing the intestine. To cash in the benefits, include yogurt in your kid's diet everyday.

3. The triple powerhouse:

A perfect dish is incomplete without onion, ginger, and garlic. Onion, ginger, and garlic are rich in flavonoids. Allicin in garlic, Quercetin in onions and Shagaols and Gingerols in ginger are super immune boosters. White blood cells (WBC’s), also known as Leukocytes, play a pivotal role in the body’s defense mechanism. Garlic, in particular, enhances the production of these cells.

4. An immunologically fishy affair:

Fish is a must for improving the immune system. It (example Salmon) is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for proper functioning of the brain. Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can also stimulate the activity of the immune cells.

Make nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios, dried figs, raisins) your kid’s best friend. Rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, nuts are a blessing in disguise for the immune system. Almonds, in particular, are effective in stimulating the activity of Natural Killer Cells.

6. The yummy berries:

The health benefits of berries are immense. Raspberries, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries or strawberries, your kid can never have enough. Smoothies, juices, fruit salads or raw, children love to have them all. The berries are rich in antioxidants. Needless to say, they help to strengthen the immune system.

7. The turmeric magic:

Many immunological diseases can be taken care of using turmeric. Turmeric with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties is a great life savior. The antioxidant Curcumin present in turmeric contributes towards its anti-inflammatory property.

8. Honey, with its antimicrobial properties

Honey, with its antimicrobial properties, is equally beneficial. Refrain from using honey for kids as small as one year or less.

9. The citrus mania:

Citrus fruits are what the doctors have just advised. You cannot miss out on citrus fruits in your kid's diet. Being a rich source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, citrus fruits will aid in improving the immune system.

10. Lean meat and mushrooms:

The usefulness of zinc is known to all and sundry. It helps in the better functioning of the immune system. It accelerates the production of White Blood Cells (an important cell of the immune system). Mushrooms and lean meat contain zinc in abundance.

11. Broccoli knows best:

It is full of antioxidants and vitamins (A, C and E) and improves the immune system significantly.

12. Sprouts, oats and barley, spinach, pulses, carrots:

These are important immune boosting foods and should form a part of your kid’s diet.
