- Trouble concentrating and completing schoolwork
- Increased aggression like biting, kicking, hitting, screaming or name calling
- Difficulty completing tasks that require patience
- Hyperactive behavior like having temper tantrums, running away or constantly being disobedient
- Withdrawing from family and friends due to moving around, a divorce, a new sibling, or bullying at school
- Poor eating or sleeping patterns
- Overreactions to small problems
Here are 10 ways you can help to let your child be more stress free!
1. Face the fears
With your support, your child must know that fears should be faced and not ignored. Do talk to them and let them know that you will be there to understand first. Later, it is important for them to know that ignoring or keeping it in will be even more harmful.
Facing them will automatically reduce their fear in 20-45 minutes. Fear is not permanent and their own biology will give them these signs easily. This will also help your child know that ignoring the problem is not going to make anything better and they should actively try to solve their problems whenever they can.
2. No one is perfect
Your child is going to have stress about their marks and activities. Kids are humans and not machines, right? While it is important that you let them try whatever it is - motivating them - but remember to not be too hard on them. If they are not so good at it you should give them a break. This is especially for older children. You should let them know that is not fair for them to say yes to any work that is given which may be something that they do not have the skills for.
3. Look on the bright side!
Your child will always look at all the things that are bad in the situation. So, try making them look at how not everything is lost and there are some positives that they are very much capable of.
4. Let kids be kids
Organise them to have a good amount of time where there is no competition or time limits. Let them be free with their toys, have relaxation activities, play games/sports, do yoga, paint, have a tea party, put on a play, or just be silly.
It is even better when you can join in - as they will feel that they do not have to go through the stress all alone. These activities without any rules will help them enjoy and be happy about life. They will also slowly learn that when it is not possible for you to be there - it is easy for them to relax by themselves.
5. They look up to you
Your own stress should also be managed. If you are more happy and stress-free, so will your little ones. They way you not only feel but also how you handle stressful situations will be observed by them. Your positive model will help them manage their own stress in a better way.
If you let them know that they will make you happy by facing their fears and will get rewards like praise, a hug, or even something tangible like a sticker or a small treat - your child will be more confident to face their stress or problems.
7. Day vs. sleep
The difference what they face in the day and how they can relax in the night will help them calm down. A good sleep routine will keep them relaxed and less stressed. If you stick to one time everyday and have a 30-45 minute bedtime routine - their sleep will get much better.
8. Be their crutch but let them try walking first
Encourage them to know that problems can be solved. Help them solve them or give the options to let them know the hints of how you can solve problems.
9. Stress-free mornings
Since it is the start of the day, your child will take the stress around and have their own stress grown even more stronger. So, try to make the mornings more calm and relaxing for your child.
10. Do NOT give up ever!
Like the passing time, the stress will leave your child. Yet, remember - it is important that you visit a doctor when the situation becomes worse or something that you feel you cannot handle alone.
