Stop Your Child’s Runny Nose in an All-Natural Way

When it’s winter or when the temperatures really start to drop, your sensitive body tends to get easily influenced by the change in ambient temperature. Things can quite possibly get worse for children as they have a low resistance to diseases because of an under-developed immune system. A runny nose is one such common problem that your child can have from time to time. It happens when your kid’s nasal cavity is filled with a significant amount of mucous fluid that’s clear, white, yellow, or even green in colour.

While it mostly manifests itself as a symptom of the common cold, a runny nose can also be caused due to crying incessantly or because of exposure to cold temperatures and potential irritants. If left untreated, a runny nose can lead to further complications, including irritability, fever, cough, sore throat, sneezing, upset stomach, sleep disturbance, and appetite loss. Medications aren’t of much help when it comes to a runny nose. However, home remedies can be very effective as they have the potential to reduce further discomfort and promote a faster recovery in your kid.

Saline Rinse

Whether you have a toddler or a young child battling a runny nose, a saline rinse can be of great help as it loosens up mucus and makes it easier for it to be expelled from your child’s system. In addition, salt helps clear your kid’s nasal passages if there are any irritants and helps your child breathe through the nose with ease.

To begin with, prepare a saline solution by mixing ¼ teaspoon of table salt in a cup of boiled water that’s been cooled to room temperature. Now, slowly tip your child’s head backwards and put a few drops of this solution into either of the nostrils. Thereafter, close the other nostril by using your finger and remove excess mucus from the open nostril using a bulb syringe. Repeat this process in both nostrils for up to 3 times in a day and nothing more than that.

Inhaling steam to clear a runny nose is one of the most tried, time-tested, and easy-to-do home remedies. Besides reducing the discomfort of a runny nose, steam can help you clear out excess mucus that causes dripping and sneezing. More importantly, your child will be able to get a good night’s sleep, which is vital for a speedy recovery process.

For starters, you can use a facial steamer if your child is a few years old. Just make your kid lean over a bowl of steaming hot water. Use a towel to cover your child’s head and the bowl completely. Ask your little one to breathe in the steam for 10-15 minutes and then blow his or her nose. Repeat this process a few times in a day for the best results. You could also use your bathroom as a steam room to help your child if he or she is any younger.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is a very popular decongestant that helps your child deal with a runny nose and all its associated symptoms by making it easier to get rid of the mucus. All you need to do is put 4-5 drops of eucalyptus oil in a bucket of warm water. Ensure your kid takes a bath using this water for at least 10 minutes for the best results. On the other hand, you could mix about 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil in half a cup of warm, extra virgin olive oil. Use this mixture to gently massage your child’s chest, preferably before bedtime.
