When a baby is born, their tummy is literally the size of a fist. They will only be able to hold 20 ml of milk in their tummies. As they grow, their tummies grow bigger too and they’ll be able to hold more food.
When your baby is ready to have solids, you should introduce only one new solid food to them every 2 days and offer them that particular solid food consistently for 2 days. Make sure to include these foods:
1. Iron-rich foods
According to mcri, infants need to consume iron-rich foods as their first food. You can try pureed meat, boiled kidney beans, sweet potato, green leafy vegetables and tofu. You can mix it in with breastmilk or formula as well. These will be the best first foods since they’re both nutritious and easy to digest.
Mashed bananas will soon become a favourite for both mommy and baby. It is a good source of carbohydrates and potassium and is free of fats, cholesterol and sodium. It can be mashed easily with the help of a spoon and can be easily digested. You can mix in breast milk or formula to make the paste thinner for your baby.
3. Sweet Potato
This is another great food to mash up and feed to your baby. It is high in fibre and is thus great for digestion, can be introduced around 1 yr of age. It also contains Vitamin A, B5, B6 and riboflavin. Opt for sweet potatoes that are more orange on the inside - this indicates a high carotenoid content (you can find this in carrots and other brightly coloured vegetables as well).
4. Vegetable Puree
Once your baby gets used to different kinds of vegetables (by feeding it to them one at a time), you can start mixing them up. Try offering mashed potato and spinach or mashed carrots and turnip. This will ensure they get a variety of nutrients at once.
Different grains (rice, oats, wheat, corn and so on) offer different kinds of nutrients like fibre, vitamin B, iron, magnesium. Introduce one type of grain to your baby at a time to see if they develop any allergy to it. Boil and mash the grain to make your baby’s grain puree.
Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t accept the solid food at first. Persistence is everything. Keep offering a spoonful of mashed baby food during their usual feeding times until the day they finally give it a try.
