Natural Ways To Increase Breast Milk Production

Mothers are extremely concerned about their milk production, especially during their first pregnancy. Most mothers are able to produce enough milk for their babies; however, there can be a few cases where the breast milk is not sufficient to satisfy the baby’s hunger. Lack of breast milk can be due to a number of factors such as – certain illnesses, antibiotics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiency or improper feeding positions.

While there is always an option of formula, most mothers do not want to lean on it unless absolutely necessary. But worry not; there are a few natural techniques in order to increase your breast milk.

Have a look at a few of these:

1. Warm Compress

A lot many times, there is a lack of breast milk due to improper blood circulation. In order to ensure regular blood supply to your breasts, massage your breasts gently for about 5-10 minutes prior nursing. Dip a cloth in warm water and use it to massage around the nipples of your breasts, pressing gently and then lean forward to feed your baby.

2. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is considered to be an ingredient that stimulates milk production. It contains phytoestrogens which increase milk production in the breasts. You can soak a few fenugreek seeds in water overnight, boil it in the morning, strain it and drink it as tea on a daily basis or you can adopt a routine with fenugreek capsules (as recommended by your physician) for a period of 10 days. These capsules are available in any local medical shop.

3. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds, act as a galactagogue, a substance that helps the body produce more breast milk. This herb also aids digestion and helps prevent colic pain in small babies. Follow the above-mentioned process to make it into a tea or simply include fennel seeds in your cooking or grind them into a powder and take add it to milk every day.

4. Cumin Seeds

Cumin seeds not only increase breast milk production but also improve digestion, provide relief from constipation, acidity and bloating. They also contain iron which acts as a source of strength to mothers. Add one tablespoon of cumin seeds and one tablespoon of sugar to a glass of warm milk and have it once a day before bed, for a few weeks. You can also have these seeds in the form of tea, using honey or sugar as a sweetener.

5. Cinnamon

Ayurveda suggests that cinnamon increases secretion of breast milk and adds a flavour to the milk that most babies seem to like. It can also help new mothers to delay the occurrence of the menstrual cycle after delivery and thus prevent early conception. You can mix a pinch of cinnamon powder with half a teaspoon of honey or you can have it with a warm glass of milk.

6. Garlic

Garlic is a common ingredient in all households and is also very easily available. It stimulates lactation and adds a flavour to the milk that most babies like. You can simply induce garlic in your everyday diet and increase its usage by fine amounts if you already use it while cooking.
