Multi-Grains During Pregnancy: Change Your Diet For A Healthy Pregnancy Experience

When the doctor confirmed my pregnancy, I was super excited! I just couldn't hold back from touching my belly because my baby was growing within me. That’s exactly the moment I promised to protect him/her from every danger that comes our way in this world.  I kept telling my baby about the way I am going to take care of them in utero, the kind of habits I’m going to forego, and how dedicated I will be just to keep them healthy and safe.

My doctor kept telling me to consume good and healthy food so that the fertility quotient is just right to start a family. Furthermore, the doctor added that eating nutritious food during pregnancy is a must in order to have a healthy pregnancy.

Therefore, the foremost thing you need to draw your attention towards is the nutritional quotient. Every mom-to-be tends to have some crazy food cravings during their pregnancy. Remember mommy, there will be lots of temptations, so in times like these, always remember the promises you made to your baby!

According to nutritionists, in order to have a healthy pregnancy all to-be-moms need to eat a lot of good and nutritious food so that not only they’ll be healthy but it will also spurt in the baby during his/her development in the uterus.

Nutritionists say that multi-grains are a must eat if you’re pregnant because they’re exceptionally great for both mom and baby. Lack of proper nutrients to the fetus may result in miscarriage, premature birth, stillborn and other post-birth ailments like poor infant health, heart and lung ailments etc.

To avoid taking the risk of putting your growing baby’s health in danger, it is mandatory that you eat right kind of food which is rich in all the essential nutrients and micronutrients. Here are a few important and recommended multi-grains to add to your daily diet for a healthy pregnancy:

1.Wheat

This primary whole grain has a property of controlling weight and that means, you can manage your weight easily during pregnancy. It is so good that it helps in maintaining blood sugar levels and therefore, it will help in fighting against gestational diabetes. The magnesium content in wheat assists in building strong teeth and bones.

It also contains a lot of fibre which will fight against constipation and haemorrhoids during pregnancy. The vitamins like vitamin B, thiamin, folate and vitamin B6 help in the overall development and the growth of the fetus.

2. Soya

When it comes to consuming soya, moderation is the key. So, during pregnancy, it is recommended to have 1-2 servings of soya every day. They are a good source of copper and molybdenum(a metallic nutrient which helps in the synthesis of fats and carbohydrates). It is a great source of proteins, iron, vitamin K, potassium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibre and vitamin B2.

3. Oats

Oats are every nutritionist's recommendation during pregnancy. They are rich in fibre which will take care of that constipation you experience during your pregnancy. Besides that, it contains iron, folic acid, zinc and calcium.

Having anaemia during pregnancy causes your baby to be born too early or prematurely. Since anemia is a growing condition amongst women during pregnancy, it is highly recommended to eat oats as they are a rich source of iron. Hence, oats are your best friends, especially during pregnancy.

4.Maize

Corn in any form is absolutely good during pregnancy as it is rich in proteins and fibre. One serving of corn contains 2.9 gm of fibre, 5 gm of proteins, 60 gm of folate and 386 mg of potassium. It is also a rich source of vitamins and minerals.

Consuming folate/ folic acid during pregnancy is essential as it helps in avoiding serious birth defects of the spinal cord and the brain anencephaly (a defect of the brain in which the baby’s neural tube becomes deformed during the prenatal developmental process). A baby born with this condition will be able to live only for a few minutes to a few days after birth.

5.Chana

Chana also known as ‘chole’ have a low glycemic index (GI) which makes it a great whole-grain to consume during pregnancy. This is because it promotes a slow and steady flow of glucose into the bloodstreams. It helps in maintaining the blood sugar levels and prevents gestational diabetes. It is also rich in proteins, iron and it is a soluble fibre.

It regulates the hormonal levels in women as it constitutes phyto-oestrogen (a plant hormone) and saponins (antioxidants) which ensure that you don’t end up having breast cancer, especially during pregnancy.

6.Psyllium

It is yet another soluble fibre which lowers the risk of blood sugar. It basically, slows down all the breakdown and absorption process which flows into your bloodstream. It contains probiotic nutrients which support immunity during pregnancy and the best part is that your baby will obtain immunity through your vaginal fluids during the birthing process and continue to obtain it through the breastmilk, post birth.
