Most Googled Parenting Questions... Answered

About to be a parent? We know that there are a gazillion questions running through your mind. From how to feed your baby to how to put them to sleep, these questions are endless, but require an answer all the same. Here are a few questions that were googled the most in the past couple of years on parenting-related issues with the answers you’ve been waiting for.

1. How do I breastfeed?

Support your breast with one hand, keeping a finger or your thumb on top and your other fingers back from the nipple. The curve of your breast will rub against the baby’s mouth. When he/she opens wide and takes your breast, use your finger or thumb to help tuck the nipple under your child’s top lip and jaw for a mouthful of your breast with the nipple at the back of his mouth.

2. How do I stop my baby from crying and put him/her to sleep?

This is one of the most googled questions on the internet. Although infants sleep a lot, there are nights when parents do not have the privilege of a good night’s sleep. Babies also keep crying during the daytime in some cases. It is because it is the only way they can express the discomfort of hunger.

Parents ought to make sure that their little ones are well fed at regular intervals and have a comfortable bedding to sleep on. Also, it is essential to check on your baby after every hour to find out if they need a change of diaper. If everything fails, try singing to them or play some soft background music. This will help them sleep because of its recurring and soothing rhythm.

3. What and how much should you feed your baby?

At six months old, you can start with iron-rich food such as beans, lentils, eggs and meat. It is not necessary to purée everything. Babies can manage a variety of soft textures, including some cooked vegetables, grated cheese, mashed cooked meat, and soft ripe fruit like bananas. Try to avoid any food items that may cause allergies like cow’s milk, peanuts or soy.

4. When does teething start? I want to give solid food to my baby?

If your little one is constantly crying and getting annoyed by the smallest of things, get your cue. They are perfectly fine, no illnesses, but still irritable. This happens when and if teething starts. Teething usually begins around six months of age. However, it is normal for it to start at any time between three months and twelve months of age. By the time your child is about three years old, he or she will have all twenty primary teeth. The lower front teeth usually come in first.

5. How do I discipline my child without smacking?

It’s a good thing that you don’t want to resort to smacking in the first place. Try to distract yourself and your child to avoid a row. Secondly, reason with them about the cause and effect relationship of that particular issue. Use behavioral consequences to teach more responsible behaviors. Reinforce their good behaviors verbally either with a smile or a hug.
