Every mother strives to be the best mom that she can ever be to her child. This journey to being the perfect mom, it can get a bit confusing and stressful. Mira Rajput Kapoor, wife of Shahid Kapoor, who has written her own book “Eat, Delete, Junior” recently had an interview with Vogue where she spoke about what she does to look after her one-year-old daughter Misha.
Here are some takeaway points from that interview:
Happy mommy = Happy baby
“Just be happy and that will automatically transfer to your child.” This advice has been proven true time and again and now, Mira has also backed this fact. When you are happy and healthy, it automatically makes your baby feel happy. Your baby can sense when you are stressed out or sad so try to set up a happy and healthy environment around your baby.
Breastfeed your child
“It’s the biggest gift you can give to your child. And it’s also the biggest blessing for a mother.” Mira agrees that breastfeeding is indeed beneficial to both the mother and the baby. Breast milk contains all the necessary nutrients required for a baby to grow. As long as the mother is eating healthily during the breastfeeding period. So, try and breastfeed for as long as you can.
Eat smart while pregnant
“I craved for all sort of spicy Indian and Chinese food. And that is why Misha hates the bland baby food and loves her upma with nimboo, and that chocolate that Shahid keeps sneaking in.” Of course, there is no harm in having the occasional Chinese food during pregnancy but she is right about the effects it could have in the long run if you give into your cravings all the time. Make sure you eat healthy balanced food for the most part - at least 85% of the time.
Switch it up...
“Deciding what your child eats is as important as how you feed them,” You should offer a variety of meals to your baby every day. This means including different parts of the food chart in your child’s menu every day. She also suggests mixing one food item with another to make it more interesting.
...But keep it simple
“I don’t want to give (Misha) kale and quinoa for dinner and then not be able to take it forward if I’m travelling or if I’m at somebody else’s house. I think the diet should be something that’s easily doable especially when you’re a child.” She believes that you should keep the diet simple so that it doesn’t have to change even when you are not at home. This means using ingredients that you find everywhere.
Do not read any books.
“The best advice I got was not to read any books,” This is true - you may find a lot of unwanted information in books that you don’t really need. The best thing you can do is listen to advice from your mother, sisters and friends who have had children. You can even join mom groups and forums to discuss anything related to parenting. This advice will be much more valuable than ones you will find in any book, especially if you find someone who has an experience of what you are going through.
