Low Consumption Of Alcohol During Pregnancy - Is It Safe?

It is a well-known fact that binge drinking during your pregnancy is extremely harmful to a fetus. But what about the occasional glass of wine? There has been no conclusive evidence provided on why pregnant women should not consume any alcohol at all. This is why most women end up confused on whether it is safe to have a sip of that sparkling champagne on their best friend’s wedding night.

However, there has been a recent review of studies done on the correlation between light drinking and pregnancy. This included papers right from the 1950s to 2016. It was a study done based on the consumption of 2 glasses of wine or 2 pints of beer per week while pregnant. It showed that there was no evidence of a potential health risk with this low consumption of alcohol.

Dr Janet Williams, who went through this study and is known for advising against any consumption of alcohol during pregnancy, says that,

“It is known that quantity and frequency of use, particularly binging, does correlate with increased risk (of fetal alcohol syndrome). Why not give the child the chance not to have this potential limitation or health risk in their life? There are so many other factors one can worry about, so how about one less concern?”

This is indeed a valid point.

A study in 2010 (published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health) suggests that light drinking does not have any detrimental effects on a growing fetus. It was found that light drinking during pregnancy. will not affect a child’s speech and cognitive development. On the contrary, there have also been studies that show that moderate drinking can cause an adverse effect on a child’s neurological development over the years.

Earlier, doctors in Ireland would advise women to drink Guinness while they were pregnant because it was said to have a number of health benefits. This was just a few decades ago. Your own friends would have mixed reviews about the effects of alcohol during pregnancy. Most of your friends may advise you not to drink any alcohol while pregnant or nursing. Few may tell you that they drank during their pregnancy and their child turned out just fine.

The reason for the inconclusive evidence behind alcohol being harmful is that every woman is different and their bodies are different. A super fit and healthy person may be able to handle a glass of wine every week but not everyone can. At the end of the day, you are the only one who can make a decision. Do you really want to take that risk and drink that glass of alcohol? Or would you rather save it up for when they are going off to preschool?

Think about it.
