Long-Term Health Effects Chemicals Have On Your Family

We often buy a number of household products without thinking about what ingredients are used while making them. After all, if Sakshi from next door is using it, it surely can’t be that bad right? What some of us fail to realise is that using chemical-based products can take its toll on our health. This is why an increasing number of people are opting for less invasive products to use at home.

One of the most common household products we use is cleaning products. Keeping our homes clean is part of making sure that our family is healthy and safe. But the products we use to scrub our house clean could be dangerous to us and our families. Using these products could be doing more harm than good simply because they contain harmful chemicals.

Studies have shown that exposure to chemicals like ammonia could cause a blockage in our airways and affect our breathing. Certain other chemicals like chlorides and phosphates could increase our chances of getting asthma or pulmonary diseases like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). This is why we need to carefully scrutinise the labels of products we use to know what chemicals they contain.

Following are the broad categories of certain harmful chemicals used in floor cleaners:

1. Carcinogens

These are chemicals that can cause cancer or promote the growth of cancerous cells.

E.g: PERC (perchloroethylene), Phenol, Triclosan, Formaldehyde, 2-Butoxyethanol

2. Neurotoxins

These chemicals affect brain activity, resulting in headaches and loss of memory.

E.g: PERC (perchloroethylene), 2-Butoxyethanol

3. Endocrine disruptors

Exposure to these could result in developmental, reproductive, growth and behaviour problems.

E.g: Pesticides, APEs (alkylphenol ethoxylates), Phthalates

The chemicals can even cause damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs and heart. 2-Butoxyethanol is one such chemical that is especially harmful. Not only is it a probable carcinogen and a neurotoxin, it can also cause liver and kidney damage. It is added as a fragrance inducing chemical and may not even be listed on some of the bottles as an ingredient.

Trichloroethane is another chemical that can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Phthalates and formaldehyde could cause serious damage to reproductive organs. Usage of disinfectants that contain Triclosan, an antibacterial chemical, over a long period of time could lead to bacteria becoming resistant to the disinfectant. Research has shown that exposure to all of these chemicals is dangerous in the long run. It has been tested on lab animals and has proven to be dangerous. So think about the effects it would have on your children and your pets.

So now, what should you do to keep yourself safe from all of these harmful chemicals? Switch to using all-natural, safe, green products. If a product screams ‘Danger’ or ‘Poison’ on the cover, simply don’t use it. If you have any products containing ammonia, phenol, phthalates, chlorides or triclosan in your home, dispose of it safely and invest in safer, green products.
