In India, a lot of research is being done to reduce the infant mortality rate, especially during childbirth. But, still, most of the mothers are somewhat unaware of some mild and minimally invasive surgeries that can be done to determine exactly what is going on inside the mother’s body and with the foetus and thereby form the appropriate way of going about it. Laparoscopy is one such surgery that can significantly reduce the chances of severe complications during delivery and childbirth all through just a tiny cut on the woman’s stomach. So, let’s understand this procedure.
What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a minor and minimally invasive surgery that uses a thin, lighted tube put through a cut in the belly which is used to see the abdominal or the pelvic organs of the female and the condition of the foetus and its development. The Laparoscopic procedure that is done on a pregnant mother is known as Gynaecological Laparoscopy.
What all can this procedure be used for?
Apart from checking the general condition of the mother’s organs and the condition of the baby, there are a few treatments too that this surgery can do. These are mentioned below
- Diagnosing and treating endometriosis
- Treating an ectopic pregnancy
- Remove an ovarian cyst
- Treating fibroids
- Investigating cancer and removing lymph nodes
Is laparoscopy safe? What is it’s recovery time?
Given the fact that only a small cut is made near your abdomen and that too to just insert a small tube, there are very minimal risks involved with Laparoscopy. There is almost no exposure of the interior of the body to the surgical environment. This, in turn, minimizes the risk of infection. The major reason Laparoscopy has become famous is the fact that the recovery time is very less. Most of the women get discharged on the same day and only minor post-operative precautions need to be taken and those too for very less amount of time.
What all precautions need to be taken post surgery?
There are some minor things you need to take care of for a few days after the surgery.
- Drink a lot of water and keep your body hydrated.
- Eat light food and preferably the ones that can be digested easily
- In order to keep proper digestion in your stomach, try having apple juice, ginger, bread-butter and soup.
- Avoid having sex for a few days.
- Give your body some rest both physically and mentally.
