Know The Right Milk If Your Breast Milk Is Not Enough For Baby?

We all know that breast milk is the best food for babies. It is tummy friendly and contains all the nutrients that babies need and can be easily digested by their developing tummies. In addition, breastfeeding helps keep the baby protected from any harmful infections or diseases.

But what if you don’t produce enough breast milk for your baby? You may think that cow’s milk is ideal to feed your little one but that is not the best way. Now the question arises, how will your baby get the nutrition they need?

It is not wise to introduce your baby to cow’s milk when they are still under 12 months as it can have a number of undesirable side effects such as iron deficiency anemia, diarrhea and vomiting. Cow’s milk is deficient in iron, Vitamin C, E and copper. Also, it is difficult to digest and may cause blood loss through intestines.

Casein is a type of protein that is not digested easily by a baby’s body. Too much casein can cause them to become gassy. Whey protein is much easier to digest and is gentle on the baby’s tummy. While cow’s milk has 3 times the protein content of breastmilk, most of it is casein, which forms an insoluble curd, making it indigestible.

The whey-casein ratio in human milk fluctuates between 70/30 to 80/20 in early lactation, while decreasing to 50/50 in late lactation. The initial high amount of whey is suitable for the immature digestive system of the baby.

This is why breast milk is the best for your baby, and ideally should be the main nutrition source of your baby for as long as you are able to feed. So if you are not able to give enough breast milk to him/her, you need to speak to your pediatrician to find a suitable alternative, which is tummy friendly and has growth promoting nutrients to ensure a happy tummy for your little one.
