Is it safe to eat tamarind during pregnancy?

A lot of pregnant women crave for something tangy during their pregnancy. Naturally, tamarind is the first thing you’d reach for. Just thinking of tamarind will tingle your taste buds and make you salivate but is it really safe to be consumed during pregnancy?

Tamarind pulp contains many nutritional values. It is a rich source of iron, niacin, dietary fibre and much more which makes it completely safe for pregnant women. Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, by all means, go ahead and snap your tongue to the juices of tamarind.

In fact, here’s are more reasons why tamarind should be part of your everyday diet:

1. Increase in haemoglobin levels

Just a cup of tamarind pulp contains around 3.36 milligrams of iron and you only need 27 milligrams of iron in your daily diet. Such high amounts of iron will increase your blood levels which in turn will reduce the chances of preterm birth.

2. Relieves constipation

Constipation is very common during pregnancy and a common remedy for this is to up the intake of dietary fibre. Tamarind contains loads of dietary fibre, so it will help get things moving and prevents constipation.

3. Reduces Morning Sickness

You can combat nausea and morning sickness using tamarind. Especially during the first trimester when you constantly have to run to the washroom, tamarind will really come in handy. So, don’t forget to include this in your daily diet.

4. Maintains blood pressure levels

Because of the potassium, iron, sodium and many more minerals present in tamarind, it will prevent sudden spikes in blood pressure during pregnancy. Studies show that tamarind is also helpful in controlling blood sugar levels.

As is the case with anything, tamarind, when consumed in moderate quantities, will give you all of the above-mentioned benefits and more. Including it in your dishes like curries and rasams is totally fine but excessive consumption of tamarind is dangerous. Here’s why -

- Tamarind contains loads of vitamin C in it which is generally good. But during pregnancy, high levels of vitamin C increases the chances of miscarriage and pre-term labour.

- You know how tamarind can help deal with constipation because of its laxative property. The same property could cause diarrhoea. You’ll lose a lot of fluids from your body and dehydration during diarrhoea could harm the fetus.
