Is It Safe To Eat Seafood During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is the time when you have to be careful about what you eat. Since your baby gets all the essential nutrients from you, it is necessary that you eat healthy foods. The main question that’s been bugging most of the expecting moms is, if they can have seafood during pregnancy.

Is it really safe to eat seafood during pregnancy? Will it cause any harm to your baby? Well, fish is a rich source of proteins and omega-3 fatty acids. It is one of the essential nutrients for you and your baby. But you have to be very careful while eating seafood. Some fish contain a high amount of methyl mercury. This may harm your baby.

Generally, mercury reaches the water bodies through industrial effluents. This later turns into methyl mercury. This poisonous element is consumed by the fish. This methyl mercury will remain unchanged, even if the fish is cooked. The intake of high levels of mercury while you are pregnant, will damage the brain and nervous system of your baby.

It is advisable to reduce the quantity of fish consumption when you are pregnant. You can add fish, once a week to your diet. It is also safe to eliminate fish from your diet until your delivery. But, you will miss out the proteins and omega-3 fatty acids, which are difficult to obtain from other foods sources.

Follow the below rules if you want to eat fish while you're pregnant:

1. Cooked Well:

Make sure that you cook your fish well, before eating. A raw fish might contain harmful parasite and bacteria. Parasites like tapeworm will deplete the nutrients that you and your baby require.

2. Avoid Sea Fish:

Avoid seafood like Swordfish, Shark, and King Mackerel. These contain high levels of mercury. You can add fish like Cod, Salmon, Sardines, and Anchovies.

3. Preserved Fish:

Do not consume canned, preserved fish. Always go for a fresh catch.

4. Omega-3 fatty acid foods:

You can also add foods which contain omega-3 fatty acids like linseed, eggs, and yogurt to your diet.

Check for the quality of the fish, before cooking and consuming it.

2. Intact scales

3. Flesh should spring back when pressed

4. Always consume fish within 24-48 hours of purchase.
