Is It Safe To Drink Coconut Water While You Are Pregnant?

A lot of pregnant women stay away from coconut water because they’ve been told that it causes acidity or the baby’s head will actually become as large as the coconut if they do consume coconut water. These are just myths and it’s hard to even think about where these things stem from.

Coconut water is not only safe during pregnancy but it actually provides you with a whole lot of benefits. Here are a few:

1. Electrolytes

During pregnancy, certain conditions like morning sickness, nausea and diarrhea could result in loss of essential electrolytes. Coconut water contains minerals, sodium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus which will help maintain your body pH levels, blood pressure levels and also helps in muscle functioning.

2. Soothes heartburn

Many pregnant women experience heartburn, indigestion, and constipation during pregnancy. Due to the dietary fiber present in the coconut water, it acts as an excellent laxative. It also acts as a detoxifier which improves the metabolism in your body. Because coconut water is a natural acid neutralizer, it also takes care of heartburn.

3. Improves kidney functioning

Because of the diuretic properties that coconut water has, it helps flushing out the toxins and clearing the urinary tract. This prevents urinary tract infections and improves overall kidney healthy by getting rid of kidney stones and other related infections.

4. Healthy heart

Drinking coconut water will improve your potassium, magnesium and lauric acid levels which is key for regulating blood pressure. This is especially beneficial in the third trimester when blood pressure levels are known to soar high. It also increases good cholesterol in your body and fights again bad cholesterol.

5. Natural drink

When you are dehydrated, having packaged juices or drinks with preservatives, artificial flavours and high sugar content is not advisable during pregnancy. Coconut water is a much better alternative because it has low calories and low sugar levels. 

There is also a myth that says if you drink coconut water during pregnancy, then your baby will be born with a full head of thick hair or that your baby’s complexion will be fair. There is no scientific evidence for any of this. So, if you’re going to enjoy a glass of nariyal paani on a sunny day, think of the benefits mentioned above and relax.
