Independence Day Activities With Your Kid

Whether you are staying in India or not, your child must know about the history and culture of their country. You can tell them stories about various freedom fighters and how we finally got our freedom. But children are only going to get a deeper understanding about their country through activities rather than verbal lessons. So what activities can you do at home with kids this Independence day to instil a sense of patriotism? Get all the kids in your neighbourhood involved in a grand celebration!

1. Organise Skits or Plays

The older kids might have read all about Indian history in school. So you can get them to organise a skit about our country. You could help them with writing the script or hiring costumes. This way, the younger ones can also learn about their country.

2. Music/Dance Competition

Conduct a competition for your kids and their friends. They could either perform a music or dance performance. Give out Independence day theme gifts to all the participants as well - a small flag, a tri coloured key chain or eraser and some chocolates.

3. Fancy Dress

Get your neighbours to help organise a fancy dress competition where all the kids have to dress themselves up in any Indian costume. Give out gifts to the 3 best-dressed kids.

4. Theme Party

Host a theme party for Independence Day in your own house. For the food, use food colour to give a tri coloured appearance to the dishes. You can do this with idlis, sandwiches, ice creams or even cakes. Use white, green and saffron coloured balloons and ribbons to decorate the place. Ask everyone to wear a costume as well - as a freedom fighter perhaps, or their Bollywood actor or even a politician.

5. Flag Hoisting

Your child must learn the proper way to hoist a flag. You could take him to the nearest flag hoisting ceremony near your house. If there isn’t one, then take the initiative to organise a flag hoisting ceremony in your neighbourhood or simply hoist one in your backyard or terrace. If none of these is possible, simply buy a small flag for you to keep in your car or in the house and show them how to make sure to show respect to their flag.

6. Watch Patriotic Movies

If you don’t want to do any of the above, the simplest thing you can do is to sit back and watch patriotic movies at home with your kids. A couple of options are Lagaan, Chak De India, Mother India, Rang De Basanti, and Mangal Pandey.
