Mother-in-laws - Can’t live with them, Can’t live without them. Dealing with mother-in-laws is not always easy unless you’re one of those lucky ones that has a cool MIL. But whatever is the case she’s your family and you share a love for an important person, a.k.a your hubby. So, instead of dealing with problems on the surface level why not try and strengthen your bond with your mother-in-law?
1. A positive mindset is the key
Try not to jump to the worst possible conclusion in every situation. Keep in mind that just as you are new to being a daughter-in-law, your mother-in-law doesn’t have everything figured out either. Have a positive attitude towards her and consider the pros and cons of things your mother-in-law suggests before you dismiss them off altogether.
2. Lower your expectations
Every woman wants to be welcomed into the new family with open arms and be seen as the daughter they never had(or a second daughter if they already have one), but this might not always happen. So don’t get your hopes up too much, set realistic expectations and realize that it’ll take some time for your new family to warm up to you.
3. Respect might not just be earned in this occasion
Respecting your mother-in-law for her age and wisdom should be done from the first day. Don’t wait for her to earn your respect and trust, rather believe strongly that she deserves your respect. A strong bond will eventually form between you and your in-laws and you might know by now that it’s a huge advantage to be on the good side of your in-laws.
4. Talk to her
Most arguments and fights happen because of simple miscommunications. So, if something is bothering you, talk to her. Ask her how her day was and what you can do to make it better. Talk about the different things she experienced throughout her golden years and who knows, you might get to see a whole new side of your mother-in-law.
5. Think before you speak
You are bound to be frustrated with your mother-in-law in certain situations but hold your tongue - because you don’t want to be saying things that you’ll regret later. Take some time off to cool yourself down and talk over things in a civilized manner when things are getting out of hand. This will help a great deal and won’t make a bad situation worse.
