How To Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy?

We often hear that stretch marks are genetic and there’s not much you can do to get rid of them. While this is not completely wrong, you can take a few steps to prevent them from appearing in the first place.

If you’re worried that you might develop stretch marks during or after your pregnancy, here are 5 tips that can help you.

1. Hydration

During pregnancy, your body has an increased demand for hydration. Water will help in detoxifying your body and also maintaining the elasticity of your skin. 8 to 10 glasses of water in a day is ideal. Also, keep an eye out for signs that indicate you’re dehydrated. These include dry lips or throat, feeling tired and headaches.

You don’t always have to drink plain water. You can also try herbal teas (without caffeine) or fruit infused water to switch it up.

2. Moisturize

Moisturizing your skin should become part of your daily skin routine. Target areas like your thighs, back, belly, sides and any other part of your body that is prone to stretch marks. But be careful to choose a product that is specifically made for pregnant women. Among popular choices is Bio-oil and Palmer’s Cocoa butter.

If you are hesitant about using products, you can also apply oils like olive oil, coconut oil, Vitamin E oil or castor oil. These are completely natural and work wonders for your skin.

Moisturize your skin twice every day and if you find that your skin is itching or cracking then it is a sure sign that your skin is not moisturized enough. Apply a dab more to those areas and keep your skin supple.

3. The right foods

Having a balanced diet that includes foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, E, C are known to be extremely beneficial for your skin.

Carrots, sweet potatoes, red bell peppers and mangoes are rich in vitamin A which help in repairing skin tissues.

Fresh vegetables and fruits should be included in every meal as they are rich in antioxidants which help protect and nourish your skin.

Fish, eggs and nuts are also foods that help in making your skin glow. But make sure to not eat fish that has high mercury levels as it might affect your baby too.

These foods are not only good for your skin but also provide all the nutrients and vitamins that are vital for your baby’s development.

4. Home remedies

There are a lot of DIY remedies that are known to help prevent stretch marks or even reduce ones that already exist. So instead of investing money on expensive products, you can try out a few home remedies and the best part is that they’re made from ingredients that are easily available and completely natural.

A few popular ones are using aloe vera, sugar scrubs and honey on the affected areas. To learn more about how to use them, click here.

5. Exercise

Exercising during pregnancy not only keeps you healthy but also increases the blood circulation in your body making the skin more elastic. It will prevent you from gaining weight quickly which will help your body in adjusting rather than abrupt stretching of the skin. You can try prenatal yoga or even a walk or a jog daily is extremely beneficial.
