Working from home gives you the freedom to work on your own time and be your own boss. You can choose your workload, hours, ethics, and your own dress code. There are certainly numerous benefits it offers but if you lack self-discipline, you can also pick up a number of bad habits. Working from home can be distracting and your work may suffer if you let disruptions take too much of your time. You need to plan out a strategy to stay focused on work. Here are some tips that will help in keeping you motivated while you work from home.
1. Define a workspace –
As you have rooms and areas in your home dedicated for specific tasks and purposes, similarly you need to have a workspace. Just as you cook food in kitchen, and sleep in bedroom, you need to have a space where you work and do nothing else. You cannot lie on bed with your laptop and think of accomplishing the best at your work. Your workspace should provide you with maximum focus. It does not need to be an elaborate office; a comfortable chair and a desk can help you in keeping your tasks organized.
2. Create a schedule –
The best part of working from home is that you do not have to worry about punching a time clock every day. You can wake up at anytime you like and work whenever you want. However, the downside to this is that you never feel like working and you keep on procrastinating until the deadline approaches extremely close. You need to make a schedule for your workday in order to stay on track. Working towards your goals by setting up deadlines will keep you from being distracted and keep you productive even through disruptions. Prioritize your tasks and responsibilities on a list and get things done.
3. Dress up –
When working from home, the temptation to wear the most comfortable clothes you have is something you cannot ignore. Also, when it is just you without any coworkers, you do not see the point of getting dressed. If you wear lazy clothes all day, you are more likely to act lazy and get less done in the entire day. However, if you dress smart you may find yourself in a much better mindset.
4. Take breaks –
While it is good to stay focused on the task at hand and work without interruptions, it is also necessary to take breaks. Go for a walk or meet a neighbor. Take a quick bite or grab a fancy lunch. If you keep working on for long hours at a go, you might burn yourself out, thus lowering your overall productivity. Small breaks at short intervals keep you refreshed and energized.
5. Socialize with people –
Working from home can take a toll on your mental health. It can lead to a feeling of loneliness and isolation. You may think of it as a welcome relief at first but soon you will realize that you are missing the basic social interaction. Go out and talk to other people after your workday is finished. You can join a group or take a class for some engaging interaction. It will really help your psyche and productivity.
