The morning is a rushed time. From being very drowsy yourself to having a long to-do list getting your little one ready for school, school mornings can be stressful and simply hectic. To add to that, your toddler will probably throw a tantrum saying he doesn’t want to go to school. And you’re left wondering why, or how you can make this better.
But don’t worry, we’re going to help you understand your toddler’s school tantrums and maybe give you a few ways to handle them too!
Why Does Your Child Dislike School?
Your child doesn’t actually dislike school. What your child dislikes though, is that they have to be away from home, a comfort zone for them, and more specifically, you! After spending so much time in proximity to their caring moms, it can be quite daunting for a child to be put into an environment where everything is unfamiliar and you aren’t around to guide them.
This is called Separation Anxiety, and is a normal phase for all kids when they start going to school. Each child goes through the phase differently. Some kids cry for a day, or a week, and the others for a month or more.
Handling Morning Tantrums
Normally, kids grow out of this phase and begin to go to school without the fuss. But if the tantrums last, you might have to make modifications so that you can make this routine less stressful for you and also your toddler.
Make Sleep A Priority
A tired toddler is a cranky toddler. Making sure that your little one goes to bed on time at night is the key to ensuring that he gets enough rest and has the energy and positive mental state that is required to keep your child in good spirits. To make sure your toddler gets enough sleep, you can make a ritual around bedtime, be it telling them a story, or singing them a lullaby. Get A Headstart the night before
If you think or expect that your toddler will throw a tantrum and spend some time like this in the morning, make sure to save yourself some time the night before. Lay out their clothes, polish their shoes and pack their book bag the night before, so that you don’t have to rush through the morning routine after soothing your toddler or spending a good deal of time convincing them to get ready for school.
Plan your mornings the night before by making sure that you set aside in advance, enough and more time to handle your toddler without worrying about the other things.
Make mornings pleasant with rituals
Spend a few minutes in the morning cuddling your toddler once they are awake. Often, their separation anxiety about school arises out of the fact that they will not have your attention and affection. They are stressed out about the changes that toddlerhood brings, so make sure you let them know that your affection will never end. Spend a few minutes in the morning talking to your toddler - this does not have to be a separate ritual. You can include hugs and cuddles when your toddler gets dressed, or ruffle his hair before you start combing it.
The truth is, with all these tactics that you might try, your toddler will still take his own time to get used to school and fall into routine. Make sure to maintain an organized routine so that your toddler doesn’t struggle with it too much. After all, the assurance that either mommy or daddy will come pick them up from school in a few hours has got to have some effect!
Don’t worry too much, your child will definitely start to react better to the new situation and school. Be patient, calm and try to avoid scolding your child. Eventually, they will feel much better about school and your routine will get simpler!
