Parenting is one of the toughest jobs in the world. It takes a lot of time and patience to raise your child to be a wonderful human. But it also happens that sometimes children can be tough. As they grow up, they undergo physical, mental, and emotional changes, and if these are not addressed properly, they can become rude and disrespectful. This mostly happens when they are confronted by the situations they dislike or dealing with some deeper issue. Many times, the only reason they do so is to gain your attention and check boundaries. You need to stay positive towards your child and deal things in a calm manner. We are sharing some tips that will help you in dealing with a situation like this.
Point it out:
If your child is behaving disrespectfully, you need to point it out right away. Ignoring such behaviour only encourages kids to continue with it. However, you should point it out in the right manner. Tell them what they are doing wrong and what they should do instead. You will need to be authoritative but not unnecessarily strict.
Tell them the consequences:
If your child continues to be rude even after you have talked to them rationally, explain them the consequences of their misbehaviour, and if they still do not stop, then make sure you carry out those consequences. You need to always carry through the consequences, otherwise, they think the threat to be of no importance and continue to be disrespectful. Also, you should never tell them a consequence that you know you cannot carry out.
If the need ever arises to discipline the child, you will need to do it properly. Not all punishments work, and the punishment must be justified and in accordance with the maturity of the child and the severity of the offence. Physical punishment and isolation are strongly discouraged as it will just stray the child further apart. These can be frightening and can permanently scar the psyche of the child. It hinders their development and does not give them the opportunity to learn and grow. A punishment should focus on teaching how to learn, connect, communicate and work through the issue of the negative behaviour.
Tell them what they should do:
While addressing the issues of misbehaviour, parents spend a lot of time and energy in telling them what they should not be doing instead of telling them the right manner in which they are expected to behave. This lack of information actually confuses the kid and he or she is left exasperated. Try to provide direct and clear instructions to the child on how they should behave. Explain to the child by providing a reason as to why the alternative suggested is better.
Staying positive is one of the most important parts of parenting. Always use positive statements and try to avoid the negative ones for as long as possible. The use of positive statements reinforces the idea in the child that you respect him or her and that they are being treated as adults.
