How to Deal with Forgetfulness During Pregnancy

Expectant mothers usually report of having brief lapses in memory or are unable to focus properly, and these problems account for 50 to 80 percent of the pregnant women. This condition is called ‘Pregnancy Brain’ and it is real. The main reasons for the short-term memory loss are the pregnancy hormones progesterone and estrogen. The sudden increase or surge in the levels of these hormones affects the spatial memory that stores information making you absent-minded. Combined with fatigue and lack of sleep due to the pregnancy, it causes your brain to lack focus and function improperly. Some researchers believe that in the last trimester when the brain cell volume decreases, that is the time when pregnancy brain strikes causing you to forget things. This is not a permanent condition though, and your brain returns to its normal form after the delivery. Here are a few methods that might help in dealing with this condition.

Note down things:

The best method to remember things is to always write down the important stuff on a sticky note and paste it down somewhere perfectly visible. Try to keep things that you use often at the same place so that you do not have trouble finding them. Making lists and using planners can help you to a great extent.

Take a good sleep:

A lot of problems occur only due to the lack of sleep. It may be really difficult but try to get as much rest as possible. A minimum of 8 hours of sleep is required by the body for its proper functioning. The more sleep you are able to get, the better your brain is able to function.

Do not panic:

Stressing over the situation will not help. It will only ruin your peace. Calm yourself down. Relax doing whatever you like the most. Read a good book, listen to your favourite music, or do anything you like doing. There is no point in being hard on yourself and those around you.

Load up on Omega-3s:

Omega 3 fatty acid is essential for a healthy brain functioning. You can get it from the pregnancy safe fish and DHA rich foods. It also helps to make the baby’s brain sharper.

Take things easy:

As said earlier, do not stress yourself. Try to laugh them off and blame the hormones for everything while you still can. It is a perfect excuse for every silly thing you do. Taking things in good humour will lighten your mood and provide you with funny moments to enjoy with your partner.

Take help:

When you are pregnant, you are in the most need of any help you can get. So, accept and take help whenever someone offers in whatever way. Cut your responsibilities for a while, and focus only on things that are really important. Other things will eventually fall into place.

Be prepared:

There are always some glitches that can happen during or after pregnancy. So, you need to prepare yourself for them in advance. You do not need to be perfect at everything. Just know that it will take some time after the delivery and then your brain will start shining again.
