How to Balance Work and Personal Life After Childbirth

Many things change once you give birth to your child. You’ll realize that you have a lot more responsibilities and might feel the burden of being dragged between two important parts of your life - work and family.

Striking that delicate balance between your personal life and work life is challenging but not impossible.

Here are a few things that might help you in this regard.

1. Set priorities

You want to give your 100% to your work as well as your family, but in reality, that’s too much pressure for one person to handle. You can start by setting priorities. Maybe your kid has an annual dress competition coming up on the same day as your client meeting. Which do you go for?

This doesn’t mean you always give higher priority to your work than your family or the other way round. Just weigh the consequences of each situation and arrive at your decision.

2. Time management

Make lists your best friend. Write down everything you have to do in a day. Pay attention to your daily activities, both personal and work-related. Try not to burden yourself with more commitments.

Organize things like household chores for days you know you’ll have some free time. Don’t put them off until the last minute as it’ll only increase your work.

3. It’s okay to say no

Whether it’s your employer asking you to take on an extra project or your child’s teacher demanding your presence at a PTA meeting - It’s okay to say no sometimes. You don’t need to feel guilty about it. Have a healthy discussion with your family and your boss about things that are bothering you and things you won’t mind spending your time on.

4. Consider child care

This might be the first thing you would’ve considered when you decided to go back to work. You have a lot of options when it comes to child care - Play schools, nanny or your kid's grandparents. While choosing a play school, make sure you choose one with good reviews and trust in parenting circles and the same applies while hiring a nanny.

5. Take care of yourself

We know as a supermom, you want to do everything for everyone. Amidst the constant running around and taking care of things, you tend to forget about the most important person - you. Your family doesn’t want you stressed out or unhealthy. So, take some quality “me-time” every now and then. Also, make sure you're getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet.
