How To Avoid A Cesarean (C-section)?

Cesarean or C-section should be done only during birth complications but in India we see it done more often than it is necessary. But rather than the actual delivery, it’s what follows after it that worries a lot of moms-to-be. Longer time for recovery, Backpains and general discomfort is usually present after having a Cesarean. But don’t worry, there are a few things you can do yourself to avoid a C-section delivery as much as possible.   

1. Find the right doctor

This is one of the most important things you can do to increase your chances of having a natural birth. Look into the primary cesarean rate of your obstetrician. This will tell you about the number of C-section deliveries s/he has done. This number should be as low as possible. If less than 15 to 20% of the deliveries have been cesarean then you’re good to go.    

Also, talk to your doctor that you’re trying to have a natural birth, they will give you tips and suggestions on things you can do to prevent a C-section.

2. Doulas will come in handy

Doulas are professional support persons for women to help them through their pregnancy and birth. Providing Informative, emotional and physical support are part of Doulas job description.

This practice has been going on since ancient times and is more important now than ever. We usually seek the advice of our family or friends when in doubt but there is a knowledge gap about the modern medical science and professional doulas will help fill in this gap.

3. The right diet

To meet the challenges that labour and pregnancy are sure to set, a healthy diet full of proteins, vitamins, and carbohydrates is very important. Having a well-balanced diet will allow you to stay in shape and not gain weight rapidly. This will decrease the chances of having a C-section because Obesity is often linked with Cesarean. If you have a feeling your daily diet is not healthy enough or nutritious enough, talk about this with your doctor.

If you have gestational diabetes you have to be extra careful about what you eat.

4. Exercise

Mild and low impact exercises like walking, yoga and swimming are highly recommended during pregnancy. This will keep you and your baby fit and healthy, thereby reducing the chances of C-section. Exercising till you break a little sweat will get your heart beating faster and every organ in your body functioning to its prime.

Before you start an exercise regime, make sure to take your doctor’s approval.

5. Labour induction

Sometimes inducing labour is a necessity but in cases where it is a want and not a need, try to avoid it. “Elective Induction” is one that is done for convenience when you’re in pain. Take the support of your husband or your birthing partner to help you with the breathing and other labour techniques. Discuss with your doctor about pain-management options so that you’re comfortable enough to not incline towards C-section when the day finally comes.
