Many moms are confused and often worried about their first menstruation after childbirth. Having lived the last nine months of their pregnancy without experiencing periods, new moms would naturally be a little astonished by the reconstruction of their bodies.
This post is going to help you understand those bodily changes better.
When will the menstrual cycle start after delivery?
One of the better things about pregnancy is that the woman does not have to change her pad for nine months. The relief that women feel for avoiding this chore is something they can never forget. But it is important to note that a woman’s period can start any time after she has given birth to her baby. Even then, there is no definite date for this, as every woman's body runs on its own schedule.
Periods during breastfeeding can last for a maximum of 7 to 8 months. In some women, the period can start from two months after the birth of the baby. But this is nothing to worry about. Just give yourself and your body time so that they can get back to normal again.
1. If your baby sleeps for long periods of time after consuming your breastmilk, it means that your period is near.
2. When your infant begins to eat solid food, then it should be taken as a sign that your period is close.
Sometimes you may notice blood stains during breastfeeding. This is absolutely normal. Stains may appear at any time and aren’t fixed.
How does the first period after breastfeeding feel?
The experience of the period is different for every woman, but its intensity is uniform in all.
The bleeding that happens after childbirth is called postpartum bleeding. This is the unwanted blood in the woman’s body. It is thick red and more in quantity than your monthly discharge. Generally, a sanitary pad can give you 4 hours of relief but you might need to change the pad again frequently.
Changes in menstrual discharge
The colour of the blood that will flow from your vagina after the birth of the baby also changes. First, its colour is red, and later becomes lighter, and in the end, can also be light brown. After this, the colour of the discharge will change from light yellow to yellow. In the final stage, the discharge will not be bloody, but something else known as lachia. This discharge will reduce slowly and eventually stop. Most women experience a strong smell from the discharge.
However, the postpartum discharge should end in one week, but may go on for longer for some women, so there’s no reason for worry. You might have to go see a doctor, though, when you experience pain or trouble during the discharge or if you pass blood clots or feel dizzy.
How breastfeeding affects your body:
Breastfeeding prompts your body's glands. When the baby sucks on the mom’s nipple, prolactin is produced in your body and flows into the blood. Prolactin will continue to flow until you breastfeed the baby. Prolactin prevents your body from ovulation. This means that the egg will not come out from your ovary and eventually, you will not have periods.
Even after the arrival of periods, mothers can breastfeed the baby and the taste of the mother's milk does not worsen. Mother's milk is completely safe despite menstruation.
With the onset of periods, though, the mother's milk gets reduced. It is temporary and becomes normal in a few days. This means that as the menstruation becomes more stable, so will the breastmilk. All this is the result of the change in the hormone levels of the body.
