How Birth Order Can Affect Your Baby's Personality

Whether or not the order of birth affects a child’s personality is a topic that has been widely debated. Over the years, however, most studies have drawn some common conclusions about the eldest children, middle children, and the last born.

You may or may not believe it, but the birth order does affect your baby’s personality. This has nothing to do with any kind of superstition, for it is surprisingly scientific and based on human emotions. For the ease of understanding, let us consider the three cases – Eldest child, Middle child, and the Lastborn.

Firstborn or the Eldest

Firstborns are like the leaders of the pack and hence tend to showcase such qualities as that of a leader. Firstborns usually have the following personality traits – reliable, conscientious, structured, cautious and controlling. The eldest child tends to be an achiever.

Firstborn children often bask in their parents’ presence better than any other child and hence tend to be mini-adults and more matured. They are diligent and their controlling personality traits make them want to be the best at everything they do. They excel at winning the hearts of their elders.

In terms of achievements, firstborns want to be good at everything and not just selective things. They want to be the best editors, the best dressed, the most insightful and interesting, you name it. This does not mean that they are overly competitive or want to be better than everybody, it is just that they want to excel and give their best to whatever they do.

Middle Child

The Peacemaker, the middle child happens to be the one to resolve fights and arguments most of the time. Being the middle child is confusing; they don’t know where they exactly belong. They are neither the eldest nor the youngest. This hierarchical floundering makes them find their place amongst peers rather than at home.

Some of the personality traits of middle children are as follows – people pleasers, rebellious, have large social circles and are sometimes confused about things.

Middle children often tend to be more rebellious than what you would like. Parents ought to be ready for a series of ‘No(s)’ before getting them to say yes for any particular thing. The characteristics of the middle child may vary depending on the gender; meaning, if the firstborn is a boy and the second born is a girl or vice-versa, then the middle child too would have a tendency to be more like the eldest child since technically they are the first girl/boy in the house.

Last born or the Youngest

Youngest children tend to be the most free-spirited ones because of their parents’ lax attitude (in a good way) towards them. They are the baby of the family and are often showered with excessive care and love.

Some of the personality traits of the youngest born may include – fun loving, uncomplicated, manipulative, outgoing, attention seeking and self-centered. One of the main personality traits is the attention seeking trait. No matter what they are doing, unlike the eldest child, they prefer to be in the spotlight.
