Home Remedies for Tonsillitis in Children

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of lymph nodes called tonsils that are located on either side of your throat. These tonsils work as a defense mechanism in the sense that they prevent harmful infections from entering the body. At times, your tonsils can get overwhelmed by the action of bacteria or viruses and swell up or get inflamed as a result. While tonsillitis is quite a common occurrence in children, adults are prone to have it too.

As a direct consequence of a bacterial or a viral infection, tonsillitis and its symptoms usually go away in about a week or ten days’ time. From high fever and pus in the throat to nausea and abdominal pain, it can be a very distressing experience for any child to have tonsillitis. Although surgery is a viable option for adults, it isn’t really preferable for a young child. Fortunately, there are a number of highly effective home remedies that you can use to treat tonsillitis in children.

Lemon

Lemon possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, making it very effective in dealing with inflammation and infections. As it’s very rich in Vitamin C content, it can also improve your body’s resistance to outdoor infections. To begin with, squeeze out all the juice from a lemon. Mix this juice with a teaspoon of honey and a pinch of salt in a cup of warm water. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and make your child drink the liquid 2 or 3 times in a day for the best results.

Saline Water

This is one of the most common remedies to treat tonsillitis naturally. All you need is a teaspoon of table salt and a cup of warm water. While warm water soothes your tonsils, salt helps kill the bacteria or viruses, thereby reducing inflammation and providing you with instant relief. Just mix the table salt with warm water and make your kid gargle the solution for at least 30 seconds. Remember to spit the solution once you’re done and never swallow it. To ensure a speedy recovery process, repeat this process twice a day.

Turmeric

Turmeric’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities make it an exceptional choice when it comes to treating tonsillitis in children. It also helps relieve irritation symptoms that are associated with tonsillitis. For starters, mix a teaspoon of powdered turmeric in a cup of warm salt water or plain hot water. Make your child gargle this solution for at least 30 seconds.

You could also replace water with a pinch of black pepper powder and warm milk. Make your child drink this mix of turmeric, black pepper, and warm milk every day for 2-3 days for a positive outcome.
