Here’s Why You Don’t Like The Smell Of Specific Foods During Pregnancy
Have you started with your food aversions already? Are you unable to stand the smell of certain foods you hog before pregnancy? It’s okay because these are normal symptoms you’ll face throughout your pregnancy, especially during your first trimester. There’s absolutely nothing to worry about here.
However, we understand that you would be curious about these changes and it is good to be inquisitive. One must always be aware of the changes their body experiences and the reasons behind these changes. If possible, it’s also nice to know the solutions to them as well.
So, let us tell you what causes you to not like the food items you once binged on with total bliss before you conceived.
Ever heard of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)? This hormone is the cause of your sudden hatred of your favourite foods because you can’t stand their smell. hCG is produced by the placenta after your eggs have fertilised into an embryo. The presence of this hormone is what detects and confirms your pregnancy when you pee on a stick or use a pregnancy test strip. Hence, it is very important to know the effects this hormone has on your body during pregnancy.
Now, until 11 weeks of your pregnancy, the hCG level in your body is a on constant fluctuation, where it rises till it reaches its peak around the end of your first trimester. This fluctuation causes your aversion to certain foods and their smells.
You may feel nauseous or pukish or even have morning sickness. Foods that are frequently avoided by women are meat, eggs, and spicy foods.
On the other hand, some women tend to have cravings for non-edible things such as ice, hair or chalk. This condition is called pica and you must consult your gynaecologist in case you experience these cravings at any point during your pregnancy.
If you feel you’re compromising on a lot of nutrients due to your aversion to healthy foods such as green vegetables or meat, come up with alternative solutions to consume
