Pregnancy entails a lot of changes for a woman, both bodily and mentally. Weight gain is something that is inevitable and necessary for a pregnant woman. Losing the pregnancy weight is something that most women are apprehensive about. They don’t need this additional worry during pregnancy. A healthy, balanced diet and regular exercises will help you lose the weight eventually. There are a lot of myths associated with weight gain and that’s something that needs to be rectified. Being in the know will help you to go about it in the right way and displace any fears that you may have had. Here are a few things that you need to be aware of during pregnancy.

Why Am I Gaining Weight?

The weight gain is not only due to your baby growing inside you but due to a whole lot of other factors too. The other factors responsible for the weight gain include placenta, amniotic fluid, breast tissue, stored fat, larger uterus, increased blood supply.

What Is The Ideal Weight Gain?

There is no ideal weight gain. It differs from person to person depending on their prepregnancy body type. Your BMI( Body Mass Index) is what determines the weight you need to gain during pregnancy. Underweight women need to gain more weight during pregnancy compared to overweight women. Consult with your doctor regarding the weight you need to gain. While it is true that what you eat affects your baby, make sure you’re taking your needs into account too.

Managing Your Weight Gain

Women should not try to lose weight or diet during pregnancy unless recommended by the doctor. Overweight women might have to lose weight under their doctor’s guidance. If you need to gain weight during your pregnancy, here are a few tips on how to go about it the healthy way.

1. Maintain a healthy, nutritious diet and make sure to eat five to six small meals every day.

2. Keep healthy snacks on hand such as nuts, fruits, yogurt, cheese, etc.

3. Make sure you exercise regularly.

4. Avoid sugary food and drinks.

5. Make sure you have plenty of fluids. Morning sickness will leave you dehydrated so if you feel your fluid intake is not enough, consult with your doctor.

Gaining too much or not enough weight during pregnancy will affect you as well as your baby. Focus on being healthy and do as your doctor recommends. Worrying about the weight gained during pregnancy will get you nowhere except a few frown lines and additional stress. You will eventually lose all the weight gained within a few months of giving birth. Being healthy should be your priority.
