Babies are delicate little beings who are the most adorable blessings for moms. But, since they are fragile at a young age, they tend to have different problems as well. One such problem is colic. Most babies get colic and it does not indicate that the mother is doing anything wrong. Although it isn’t her fault, a mother may still feel guilty about being unable to pacify her baby. The most common cause of colic is indigestion. When a baby feels discomfort in her tummy, she/he will express this discomfort by crying.
Also, opting for cow’s milk in place of breast milk is not at all advisable as cow’s milk can have adverse effects on babies. Not only cow’s milk is harder to digest for the little ones, but the nutrient content of cow’s milk is also not favourable for the babies. The low iron content creates an iron deficiency in babies whereas a higher level of proteins and minerals may lead to severe dehydration, (Reference: NCBI)
When we get tummy troubles, it makes us get fussy too. So, it is understandable that babies get fussy due to colic. They cry a lot because they have no other way to express how they feel. Making sure your baby’s gut health is in the best condition will help ensure that he/she stays happy and comfortable. Here’s how you can ensure it:
1. Compulsory Breastfeeding
To avoid tummy troubles, your baby should get nothing but breast milk for the first 6 months i.e., exclusive breastfeeding. Breast milk alone contains the right amount of nutrition that is required for a developing baby. Its composition is such that it breaks down easily in your baby’s tummy helping her absorb all the nutrients in it.
2. Breast milk has adequate proteins and they are easier to digest
Breast milk contains right quality and quantity of easily digestible proteins for your baby. Casein is difficult to digest, especially for the not-so-mature digestive system of babies. According to NCBI, breast milk contains casein and whey protein in adequate amounts (i.e., the whey to casein ratio of breast milk is approximately 35:65), making it easier for the baby to digest.
Also, a baby’s body is designed to digest breast milk easily which is why it is the safest and healthiest option for an infant’s developing tummy.
3. Breast milk improves your baby’s gut health
Breast milk actually contains ingredients which help improve your baby’s gut health. A newborn’s gut is sterile and they will obtain the healthy microbes and bacteria that their bodies need only from their mommies. Also, the whey proteins present in breast milk are very gentle on the baby’s tummy and help in gastric emptying.
So, it is very important that babies drink breast milk for proper gut functioning.
4. Breastfeeding will help babies fight infections
You may (or may not) have heard about how you should continue to breastfeed even after you fall sick. This is because breast milk will then contain powerful antibodies that help the baby fight any infections because chances are, the baby already has the infection-causing germs in her body. The same goes for when your baby falls sick. According to Science News, the backwash of the milk from the baby’s mouth will send an alert to the mother’s body that the baby has an infection. The breast milk will then carry the antibodies required to help the baby fight the infection.
5. Burp the baby
You should burp your baby during the feeding as well as after the feeding. This will help your baby get rid of gas well before it causes any problems and even makes room for more milk. This tip can be used for those who formula feed their babies as well.
Following these tips will help you ensure that your baby stays happy and grows up to be a healthy baby. You can only be happy if you are healthy and vice versa. So give your baby the best you can provide. If you found this article to be useful, do share it with fellow moms and help them out too!
