Going off birth control : What can you expect?

You probably felt a bunch of changes when you first got on birth control and you might feel differently about it now. Whether you're trying to conceive or you’re just looking for an alternative, whatever the reason is for going off the pill, here are a few things you must know about it.

Irregular periods

Your birth control pill not only does the job of avoiding pregnancy but also makes your periods regular. If you’re someone who’s been on the pill for many years then you might not even know what your menstrual cycle would be like without it. It might take a month or two after you stop taking contraceptive pill for your body to adjust to the change and have 28-days period cycle.

Heavy flow

Your pill also does the work of lightening the blood flood and reducing stomach cramps. So, arm yourself with enough maxi pads and heating pads before you decide to go off the pill.

Weight change

This is entirely dependent on the individual. You might stay the same but some women believe that they added on a few pounds while they were on the pill. But there has been no definitive evidence of this, so if you’re looking to shed a few kilos, maybe don’t do it by avoiding birth control.

Sex cravings

You will experience an increase in libido when you stop taking birth control because of the spike in the testosterone levels, especially during the ovualtion period. There’s nothing wrong with getting a little frisky!

Hormonal changes

You’ll realize how real of a thing PMS is. You might be moody more times than usual and even your breasts will start aching now and then because of the hormonal swings.

Breakouts

Most birth control pills clear up in your skin because they have the ability to lower the levels of androgen, which produces oils in your skin. After you stop taking the pill, a pimple or two will become a common thing, especially around your period.

Immediate chance of pregnancy

You might have done many calculations as to predict the chances of you getting pregnant, but technically it’s possible for you to get pregnant as soon as a week after you go off the pill. But even if you don’t, do not stress about it too much, it depends on each individual so there’s no way of saying the right time you’ll get pregnant.
